Timothy Michael Weiss Posted November 17, 2016 Posted November 17, 2016 A heavy hitting blues for big band composed in the vein of Thad Jones. I'm playing 3 of the 5 trumpet parts (including lead). The best part is the tenor solo, though; Mike McMullen from Sacramento laid down a killer solo in one take (http://www.csus.edu/music/faculty/mcmullen.html). I'm really proud of this composition of mine and I hope you all enjoy it! MP3 Play / pause JavaScript is required. 0:00 0:00 volume > next menu No Play, No Gig > next Quote
robinjessome Posted November 17, 2016 Posted November 17, 2016 Great chart. I love the build into the solo, nice contrast and control of energy. Maybe takes a little long getting through the initial development, I tend to prefer a slightly steeper slope. The development pace of the ensemble work after the solo feels better to me - definitely hearing the Thad influence in the ensemble writing. Nice work, thanks for sharing. Quote
Monarcheon Posted November 17, 2016 Posted November 17, 2016 Nothing much more to add from me that Robin didn't already, and he knows much more about this kind of stuff than I do. I think it's lovely. The beginning and ending sections seem to interrupt themselves a little bit too often for that flow for me, but that's minor and I see what you're trying to do. Quote
Mark Paul Posted November 21, 2016 Posted November 21, 2016 Great writing and arranging. Your tutti voicings are really solid. You mention you played 3 of the 5 trumpets, was this overdubbed or is the band live ? Quote
