HallsOfAscension Posted January 14, 2017 Posted January 14, 2017 So I wrote this piece a while back but I can't exactly put my finger on what it's missing. When I listen to it, it just sounds "meh." I had originally wanted to make a modern pop-sounding song that featured a solo cellist and a string orchestra to dedicate it to one of my friends, but since I'm not a songwriter I couldn't think of the right words to set to this. I was thinking of increasing the tempo to make it less boring and getting rid of the song form to make it an instrumental piece, but I still think I need a better melodic line for the chorus and more interesting pizzicato part. Monarcheon Posted January 14, 2017 Posted January 14, 2017 I think it needs a bit more chordal extension! The same chords could either be substituted or you could add new phrases to really give the rush and emotional hype that would change the reaction. Same with changing up that high soprano line once in a while. Patterns are great, but breaking those patterns is even sweeter. Also, you V chords either have minor 9th's or minor 3rd's, the first is acceptable if it resolves correctly, but the minor thirds are a big nono! Cheers! Quote
HallsOfAscension Posted January 15, 2017 Author Posted January 15, 2017 Oh yeah I see it now! I have a i | v | VI 7 | III-V | progression going on throughout the whole thing pretty much... I'm definitely gonna spice it up with some better chords! I'll see what I come up with in terms of the soprano voice. I always thought that was a weak line I had written, so I'll be sure to change it. Thank you so much! Quote
maestrowick Posted January 15, 2017 Posted January 15, 2017 I'll also add try to change the bass drum up more. A live-drummer wouldn't necessarily play what was programmed. Bring down some of the volumes of the layers to let the music breathe! Quote
