BeanGarden Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 I've been writing a piece for a small concert band, and i really just don't know where to take it (hence it being in the incomplete section) It's inspired by fireflies (which i've been weary about as an inspiration but i had some good ideas so i forged on ahead) and the synth sound is meant to be wine glasses being played by percussionists. the first problem is that there's a section in the piece where its mostly empty except for a vibraphone, (starting around 2 minutes) and i wanted to write something for the flutes to sound like little flashing firefly lights flitting about, but im having trouble coming up with something i like. But my main problem is i have no idea where to take the piece after everything you hear. i don't want it to crescendo to an ending yet, and i don't quite have inspirational ideas that i can bring into music, so im just a little lost and thought i would ask for advice. pateceramics Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 When they are in their grub stage, baby fireflies hunt earthworms many times their own size through tunnels underground... in PACKS!!!!! They are like tiny wolves!!! I don't know if that thought unsticks anything for you, but it certainly inspires me! Also they are in decline worldwide, most likely due mainly to pesticide use in our lawns, although habitat loss, mowing, fertilizing, and irrigation practices are probably also major factors. We humans are a terrible excuse for a species. This is a good start. When I get stuck I think in terms of "plot twist!" or "scene change" and try to find a B section that contrasts with what I have already. Quote

I love making sounds that are physically representative of real life things. such as the part near the end where i have instruments popping up and going to the backround immediately, much like fireflies. Maybe i could make a small flute melody to represent a little baby and have it start coming in overwhelmingly in different parts. or i could take it a different direction and have someone play a very dull undeveloped saxophone sound (because babies have no lights) and give it a back and forth duet with something very gorgeous like a euphonium. I think the second idea would be very easy to tie in to what i have as well. I'm having so many ideas. thank you so much. you're awesome and beautiful. Quote
pateceramics Posted January 19, 2017 Posted January 19, 2017 Hahaha! Packs of roving, ravenous flautists and brass players! Glad that was a help! Quote
Ken320 Posted January 19, 2017 Posted January 19, 2017 I prefer to think of them as little emissaries whose butts light up. 1 Quote

So maybe I could elaborate on some beautiful world they hypothetically come from. Or maybe decode a hidden message from them and hide it in the piece. Quote
Ken320 Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 Yes, a code of some sort. Many possibilities there. Quote
