Ferdi-B Posted February 20, 2017 Posted February 20, 2017 This is a recording of the second movement of my first string quartet. The recording is from the dress rehearsal. I composed this five years ago. Quote
jrcramer Posted February 20, 2017 Posted February 20, 2017 whoa. I liked it. The tonal language is nostalgic sounding early 20th century. You write often for the higher range. It works, although I think at times you can hear the performers are a bit uncomfortable in that range. You say it is 5 years old. How do you feel about it now? Love to hear the other movements if they are available Quote
Monarcheon Posted February 20, 2017 Posted February 20, 2017 It's good. I wish the loud parts stayed louder a little longer and the softer parts not as ubiquitous. Something I notice is the very separated tessituras between voices sometimes, which I get is to make it stand out more, but sometimes I don't think it needs to be, even if it's holding one note (which in and of itself is something to avoid), and if it's separated by the high and mid-low voices. Other than that, it holds its themes and motifs quite well, though maybe some different takes on the idea could have been used to vary it up a little more. Cheers! Quote
Sojar Voglar Posted February 21, 2017 Posted February 21, 2017 This is so called "harmonic scale". Although there is no chromatic use at all, it is completely OK as it is. Maybe because the duration is perfect. A longer movement would strive for contrasts but here there is no need for that. Good job. :) Quote
Martim Manuel Posted February 21, 2017 Posted February 21, 2017 Brilliant, one of the best pieces I've seen here soo far. The way harmony travells through the music is unique and well constructed. I really enjoyed the use of the dynamics. Quote
Ferdi-B Posted February 27, 2017 Author Posted February 27, 2017 Thanks for your comments! I will be posting the other two movements over the next month. @jrcramer I keep changing my mind about old pieces. A the moment I like this though, which is why I posted it. I would do things differently now. However, I wouldn't change anything in an old piece. I like to listen, share and analyse what I did in order to develop old ideas of mine in new pieces. Quote
