Xavier Posted April 4, 2017 Posted April 4, 2017 So I've been messing around with this track for a while now, having promised to make the soundtrack for my friend's little text adventure game. It's pretty standard fantasy fare, but I didn't want to even bother trying that epic orchestral hubbub. That whole area is completely beyond me at the moment, and frankly it's all a bit samey anyway. Instead I opted for a sort of baroque sound, or at the very least a vague imitation of it from the perspective of an amateur with no real musical knowledge, and not a whole lot of experience or love for said sound. I'm primarily looking for feedback on three elements: All around technical stuff. Is it musically correct? Are the instruments out of their range or unrealistically played in some significant way? (I do plan on going back through and adjusting the tiniest details like humanizing the velocity and tempo variation regardless) The ending, starting with the key change. I'm concerned that said change and the bit that follows after might be egregiously sloppy/weak from the perspective of someone who knows what they're talking about. Does it sound good allaround? This is subjective of course. Pull no punches; I'm aware that I have no idea what I'm doing. Do bear in mind though that I'm not trying to follow any particular form to the letter, just to evoke a mood without ruining the immersion of the musically literate. Range/tessitura-wise I think you do a pretty good job of using the nice sounds from each instrument. The key change was relatively smooth for a whole step change. The ending portion where the two instruments switch off feels a little bit out of character since the instruments blend together so nicely until that point. Maybe have them end homophonically (melody/accompaniment) or even polyphonically (two different melodies) to bring back that unity just for the end. It could have gone more places dynamically, especially text adventure games like that can get a little too in your face, but this variated enough to where the track as it now can be laid down. I'd experiment if you have some time though. I think it sounds great! You have a lucky friend. 1 Quote
KJthesleepdeprived Posted April 6, 2017 Posted April 6, 2017 Yep @EveryThingMonarcheonSaid It sounds pretty good just the way it is. If I were your friend, I'd be pretty well pleased. One teensy weensy question though: Will the track be needed for a longer period of time than its actual length? I'm thinking of certain game soundtracks that were written specifically so they could loop their tracks and keep going as needed. That wouldn't work quite as well here because of the key change, but it wouldn't be hard to make an adjustment towards the end to allow seamless looping. It's not really necessary but just an option to keep in mind if you can't control how long a player is going to be hearing that track repeated, which is likely to be the case in a game like this.
