millert1409 Posted April 27, 2017 Posted April 27, 2017 As part of a composition assignment, I had to write a melody for a James Joyce poem, create variations of that melody in different modes, and then set 3 of those variations to quartal/quintal, extended tertian, and secondal harmonic backgrounds. Here is my blues pentatonic variation, set to an extended tertian harmonic background. Let me know what you think! Luis Hernández Posted April 27, 2017 Posted April 27, 2017 It sounds nicely bluesy. But what do you mean with extended tertian background? It sounds tonal harmony to me.... Quote

Luis Hernández Posted April 27, 2017 Posted April 27, 2017 OK that's what I thought.... If you try quartal/quintal/secondal harmony it will be different...!! Quote
fishyfry Posted April 27, 2017 Posted April 27, 2017 Very cool. There's not much I can say except I love blues and you've got a great little riff here. Do post the full set of variations when they're finished. That's an interesting assignment and it'd be neat to see how you approach those different techniques. Quote

Yeah absolutely! I used a phrygian variation for the quartal/quintal harmonic background, which gave it a completely different sound. I've been struggling with the secondal variation though- it's been difficult to find a way to make secondal chords work with it. Quote

The quartal/quintal variation is on my page if you'd like to check it out. Still working on the secondal variation though! Quote
