markstyles Posted July 9, 2017 Posted July 9, 2017 (edited) Here is a version of the Beatles 'The Fool On The Hill'.. As you will hear, I was faithful to sections, but also took liberties with others. Of course I had to put in some psychedelia into it.. It's light and playful.. I always liked the recorders and trombone section in original.. but felt when I did it, didn't quite work, being repeated, so I altered them a bit.. I threw in some extra stuff. Like George Harrison's almost patented Leslie Guitar into it for a brief moment (so Beatles).. I tossed in other bits, to give it a music collage feel, also. Luis Hernández Posted July 9, 2017 Posted July 9, 2017 Wow, it's like a modern symphonic arrangement. It's very nice to listen to this work. I like your compositions but this song is so well-known that I can appreciate your work in other ways. I love the sounds you bring here, I mean percussion and other effects, too. They all create a distinct atmosphere. Quote
Monarcheon Posted July 14, 2017 Posted July 14, 2017 I don't really know the original song, but if I'm treating the piece as is, I would say the "rising-cut sound effects" after the v˚ chord (which I found awkward; not sure if that was in the original song), when taken as pitch did not sound correct, given what I know about the Beatles. I do love the guitar doublings on the melody; it's a uniquely calm timbre. Maybe it doesn't need to be there all the time? I don't know. I got to a chromatic passage on an F#, and am not sure if that was in the original song or not, but to me it took away from the whole atmosphere. If it was in the original, I would find a way to make it not so jarringly different. The organ sound was at an awkward range for cohesiveness (just a bit too high). Good work. Quote
markstyles Posted September 4, 2017 Author Posted September 4, 2017 (edited) The chords and harmonic content are very true to McCartney's version. I slowed it down. When the song came out, it was quite striking, because of his pitch shift. Not sure if a pop song had ever done that before .. After analyzing the piece more closely, I altered, his flute section, (really a variation of original).. Cause I felt I couldn't pull off what he did.. I sincerely re-arranged it, like it would have been an alternative like something he might have done. It is one of my favorite Beatle songs (then again, about 1/2 of their material, are my favorite songs).. McCartney/Lennon, and Brian Wilson have inspired me greatly.. As I've aged, my palette has widened a lot. I've learned to appreciate types of music and processes, that I didn't when i first started playing music.. I have noticed, that after the Beatles Split-up, George Harrison's pieces would often be the most 'Beatle like'.. It's like he had a better overview of what made a Beatle's song sound the way it did.. Edited September 4, 2017 by markstyles Quote
