Hi all,

I've finally got a more complete re-write of my "Discussions in D minor", but as was pointed out to me, the title didn't really fit the music and so I changed it to "Fantasy for Reeds and Horn" bit boring but it fits better at least.

Also I thought I would make a new thread for it as the old one already had several links within it, I thought it would just be easier to make a new thread.

I think I've listened to all the advice that various people gave me and made the piece better, but ultimately that's a matter of opinion and mine is obviously biased.

Thanks again to all those that gave me help and advice with this piece. I've spent quite a bit of time with it now as I really do like it myself and wanted to improve it as much as I could. I hope I didn't over do it.

Lastly I'm not really happy with the sound quality, but at least I hope it's not so bad as to spoil the music too much.

I will post the re-scripted score later as I have to tidy it up a bit first and I was too eager to get the music out to wait 'till I had it all neat and tidy.

As usual, all comments welcome good or bad.

Me encanta = I love it.

I still have in mind the previous versions.

I think the transitions between parts are now smooth (1:35 and 3:15) and the central section is distinctly different. I also notice the counterpoint lines are richer. Very very nice.

I admire your patience, I never go over my pieces, I'm lazy for that, or I prefer to make new things. But sometimes it's worth to do it, as in this case.

Greetings.

Gracias amigo,

I don't know if it's patience or obsessive behaviour  but I do like to make each piece as good as I can, even though it will now be filed away and never heard of again lol.  I don't have your level of expertise Luis and so I do tend to get so far and then need advice on how to improve it, and thanks to you and people like you, I usually get really good advice on how to continue with the work and, in most cases, it is very satisfying to take that advice and work with it, and in the process, I think I learn a lot so for me it really is worth a lot.

Thanks again for taking the time to listen and offer your suggestions.

I am still working on making the score more legible and maybe I will post it when it's done, but I did add a second violin and a clarinet to this version and I think that gave the counterpoint a much richer feel.  I'm still disappointed with the sound quality of the mp3, the Sibelius file sounds much much better, pero bueno es lo que hay!

Wonderful!

What I like about this piece is that the music always continues. The piece tells a story from the beginning to the end without any interuptions.
I love the beginning, which contains some minimalistic touches. Now the oboe has much more interesting conversations with the other instruments.
Lovely melody in the violins at 1.45 and nice interactions with the other instruments. At this moment the minimalistic fragments make place for more classical fragments.
3.17: Very romantic part!
My only point for now is that you should get it performed!

Hi Maarten, thank you so much, I'm so glad that changes are noticeable and that they're an improvement on the original.  That opening 4 note motif is meant to be a little minimalist, but I worried that it got boring quite quickly.  I didn't want to over develop it though, at least until later in the piece, so I added the clarinet to give it a bit more meat lol.

I'm very pleased also that you find the melodies appealing.  I think I would have to say that melody is very important to me and finding a good melody is not easy (at least for me) lol.

Of course I would love to have it performed, but it is written now, and so who knows, in years to come, I might find a group interested enough to perform some of my pieces, but for now, I am content that it at least exists, and what may come, may come.

Thanks again for your kind words, and the good news is that now I have this thing done (more or less), I have time to start thinking about the saxophone piece for you.

Kind regards

Mark
