punintentional Posted July 26, 2017 Posted July 26, 2017 Another old(-ish) piece. I had to write it for an interview at the Royal Academy of Music when I was applying for conservatoires at the beginning of the year. I was given the brief, a week or so before my R.A.M. interview, to compose a miniature of 60-90 seconds duration for two instruments of my choice using the collection of notes and intervals, D, F#, C, G, E. 1 Quote
Gustav Johnson Posted July 26, 2017 Posted July 26, 2017 This is great as a clarinetist, this would be a nice piece to work up. It's no concerto, by any means, but none-the-less I wouldn't mind performing it. That, to me, indicates a good composition. Cool work! Gustav Johnson Quote

Maarten Bauer Posted July 27, 2017 Posted July 27, 2017 VERY nice! The piece reminds me of a dance. You use the entire range of the clarinet. Using the three different registers of the instrument helps to create different atmospheres. The interaction between the clarinet and piano is fine, but for me there can be more exciting in the piano part. Now, it rather sounds like a clarinet with piano accompaniment than a 'fair' dialogue. However, it may be your intention to write a sort of clarinet sonata. It can be very hard to write a decent piece, including a climax, in so few time. You have created a wonderful arch. A love perfomance would make it even better (the digital sound is not even very bad). Well done! Quote

I agree that piano could be more exciting, however, I had quite a short deadline and had to focus on the clarinet writing, as I wanted to make sure everything was playable/idiomatic. Quote
Gustav Johnson Posted July 28, 2017 Posted July 28, 2017 Sure! Send me the parts and I'll work it up :) No idea how long it will take, given as I practice in my free time - which as a teacher is precious little. I'll send you a recording when it's worked up and played! Gustav Johnson Quote
