Anna and her demons Posted August 9, 2017 Posted August 9, 2017 (edited) Once upon a time, I was thirteen years old (I'm not sure if I can call it "childhood") and I decided to become a composer. And there are three of my early compositions. Just for fun. I think if there was a competition for the worst piece of this forum, I would win it. But i like these... eh, things. They're a bit nostalgic for me, because it was my first contatct with music. (I couldn't play the piano and my knowledge of music theory... well, it just didn't exist.) Now, four years later, I found these recordings and I was like: "Argh, it shouldn't sound like that!" And then: "Who cares? It's cute." So you can enjoy strange melodies, parallel fifths and horrible interpretation of my fourteen-years-old alter ego. I. Sen (Dream) - It was my first composition and I was very proud of it. It's in something like C major. II. Pochod poražených orlů (A strange name that I can't translate, but it's something like March of Eagles) - It's in D minor, one of my favourite keys, and I composed it for my dead grandmother. III. Der Morgenwalzer (The Morning Waltz) - It's in... well, I think it's atonal. But I'm not sure. There's B flat major, C minor, something phrygian... pateceramics Posted August 9, 2017 Posted August 9, 2017 The ability to laugh at yourself and celebrate how far you've come means you'll definitely keep growing. People who are afraid of showing their inexperience tend to cut themselves off from chances to learn. I wish I was writing something like this when I was 14. I'd be further ahead right now. (: Thanks for sharing! Quote
Noah Brode Posted August 9, 2017 Posted August 9, 2017 Hey, when I was 14, I was still writing weird rock songs on the 'Guitar Pro' program. It makes me cringe to think of how proud I was to show them off to my friends. Good for you for sharing. I liked the 'March of Eagles' best. Quote
bkho Posted August 9, 2017 Posted August 9, 2017 I always find it interesting to listen to/revisit early attempts at composition and sometimes recycled themes and fragments into more mature works. Edward Elgar actually used pieces he wrote in childhood decades later as the basis of an orchestra suite. I actually think there is some nice material here and like Noah, I thought the March of Eagles was the best of the three. Quote
ferdi9749 Posted September 9, 2017 Posted September 9, 2017 The way we grow up is something incredible, and looking back to what we've done is always a big funny moment! I look at my old sketches and realize why i needed so much time before my music started working I think that "Der morgenwalzer" is the nicest, and with the msot interesting lines....Why don't you give it a new try? Maybe "Der morgenwalzer...four years later" or "Der nachmittag walzer " ? Quote
