brickblock369 Posted August 16, 2017 Posted August 16, 2017 This is a tune I composed, intended for a modern-looking subway interior, like Seoul Subway or Taipei Metro, not like the old MBTA Green Line T's. This time I kinda thought about simplicity in the graphics, so I added chiptune instruments like the square waves. The bass and one of the synth is actually from VOPM, a VST used for emulating arcade machine/Sega Genesis synthesizers or any kind of FM synthesis. The piano is actually from a VST that emulates the Super Nintendo sound engine. I really thought about inside the calm underground this time, so dark pads and piano seemed to work. I think the drum worked for this too... MP3 Play / pause JavaScript is required. 0:00 0:00 volume > next menu Inside the Subway in the Modern Era > next Quote
Luis Hernández Posted August 16, 2017 Posted August 16, 2017 It reminds me to some sounds used in the 70's or darle 80's. Quote
Monarcheon Posted August 16, 2017 Posted August 16, 2017 You seem to have an affinity for this kind of genre; I like it. The mixing on the piano was a little bit off, I think? Not really sure how to describe it but the envelope of the sound died a little too quick whenever the range was a little bit higher and was maybe too loud. But I'm not sure. Was nice to listen to. The 7th's were nice major or minor and the nonfunctional feel was airy and pleasant. Good job. Quote
brickblock369 Posted August 17, 2017 Author Posted August 17, 2017 I'm not completely into electronic styles, to be really honest. And yes, the piano sound dies a bit too soon, that's the capabilities of Super Nintendo's sound engine. But thanks for pointing it out though. :) What do you mean by "nonfunctional feel"? Quote

I can see how that might sound like a criticism without proper context. Non-functional harmony is basically our shorthand for harmony that exceeds the norm of the standard we're all used to. Since you seem to have a slight affinity for older games, this video might interest you! Quote
