Nightfly Posted August 6, 2006 Posted August 6, 2006 I was just curious how many are you like atonal music. Since I havent met much, I thought I should check my chances this way lol :sadtears: You can also tell which atonal composers you like. Quote
cmajchord Posted August 6, 2006 Posted August 6, 2006 I really like atonal music in small doses. Shoenberg (sp?) is pretty cool. "Pierot Lunaire" is wonderful. I also like atonal jazz. Coltrane's late stuff is great.... Quote
Guest Bitterduck's Revenge Posted August 6, 2006 Posted August 6, 2006 *prepares for the atonal bashing* Quote
Nightfly Posted August 6, 2006 Author Posted August 6, 2006 Well this is a bit shocking, If you dont mind Pierre Lunaire, I can asure you, you can listen to alot more atonal music that are out there that which are much more light than Pierre Lunaire ! Quote
cmajchord Posted August 6, 2006 Posted August 6, 2006 Have you heard the Berg violin concerto? Beautiful lyrical stuff. By the way, I've listened to a lot of other atonal stuff, those are just the 2 top ones that came to mind. As a matter of fact (plug) I just wrote an atonal fugue in the chamber section.... Besides, plenty of "light" in Pierot... well "moonlight"..... Quote
Nightfly Posted August 6, 2006 Author Posted August 6, 2006 If atonal music was a person, it'd probably be Freddy Kruger. Ugly, and scary. lol :D although i do not agree. Quote
Nightfly Posted August 6, 2006 Author Posted August 6, 2006 When I have more time I will check out this fuge of yours. I am really curious. I would also recomend you Piano concertos of Bartok. I absolutely adore them. I also like Scriabin, especially his piano sonattas 1,4 and 5. I am not too keen on is orchestral music. Berg, is also very good. He is probably the least atonal of his contemporaries Weber and Schonberg. Stravinsky, is my bible, be carefull when you mention his name :D lol Quote
cmajchord Posted August 6, 2006 Posted August 6, 2006 Stravinsky, is my bible, be carefull when you mention his name lol Great point. Hard to find more honest music than "The Rite" Quote
Nightfly Posted August 6, 2006 Author Posted August 6, 2006 In many books they talk about him as a chameleon. He wrote music in many different styles. He had an amazing life, one of the very very few composers to enjoy fame in their lifetime. Quote
giselle Posted August 6, 2006 Posted August 6, 2006 Well I voted yes, but I'm sure you'd guess that! I really enjoy some Berg stuff too, cmajchord. Quote
oboehazzard Posted August 6, 2006 Posted August 6, 2006 :ady G sent me some atonal piece the other night. I likened it to someone humping a piano. Atonal music scares me, and I do not enjoy it. I know that there is structure and planning in atonal pieces, but I can never seem to find them. The only atonal thing I have ever written was a joke. I called it Nico's Lullaby. Quote
Daniel Alley Posted August 6, 2006 Posted August 6, 2006 Of course - why not??? I don't want to say I LOVE atonal music, becasue it is atonal, it has to be really really good, most i don't like but there is some i like - i like schoenberg but bartok is my favorite :D bartok! Quote
Derek Posted August 6, 2006 Posted August 6, 2006 I voted yes. OMG DEREK VOTED YES MUFFLED CHATTER. No but there's some good atonal stuff. It gives you that sensation of "wicked", you know, like how a little english boy would say WICKED!!!!! Quote
montpellier Posted August 6, 2006 Posted August 6, 2006 Great point. Hard to find more honest music than "The Rite" An extremely clever work, masterpiece of orchestration . He will probably be remembered for that alone. But I wouldn't class it strictly as atonal (even if he did go a bit bananas at the tail end of the intro) - it contains much based on various modes and was possibly the turning point toward his neo-classical stance. He tried serial writing but gave it up as futureless, as did Schoenberg in the end. Completely atonal music is rare. M Quote
Nightfly Posted August 6, 2006 Author Posted August 6, 2006 I am actually suprised how many of you here like atonl music. I never thought that you would. Many of my composiotions that I posted here are atonal. And from some of the comments I got the idea that you wouldnt like atonal stuff. Quote
oboehazzard Posted August 6, 2006 Posted August 6, 2006 Montpellier, I agree. I do not see The Rite so much as atonal. I would classify Webern's Variations as purely atonal. :P Quote
oboehazzard Posted August 6, 2006 Posted August 6, 2006 Of whom do you speak, Nico? Which composers are not dead and are horrible? Are you talking about Glass? LOL... Quote
David Posted August 6, 2006 Posted August 6, 2006 How can he be talking about Glass? He is talking about contemporary atonal music... Quote
cmajchord Posted August 6, 2006 Posted August 6, 2006 The last atonal composer(s) who will go down in history books are Elliot Carter and Gy Quote
cmajchord Posted August 6, 2006 Posted August 6, 2006 Please, please explain your sig. People seem to pick one person or one composition to scallop about, almost to prove that they've heard of them. Then they continue to scallop with no specifics. It's annoying as hell and sunds ignorant. So just shut up about them. At least pick another Cage piece to bash. Can we start bashing his "aria" or "two radios" or whatever??Otherwise it sounds like the guy that's never heard classical music and keeps bashing "boring and stiff Mozart". Quote

cmajchord Posted August 6, 2006 Posted August 6, 2006 Ok. Over it. Whew, what a weight off..... Quote

I totally agree with you. Although I had something else to add, I tried about 3-4 times and it seemed like i couldnt construct good sentences with my poor english. hehe :) so consider that I have backed-up your statement!
