HoYin Cheung Posted October 13, 2017 Posted October 13, 2017 Hi Everyone:) This is my latest Piano Concerto No.1, written for Piano Solo and String Orchestra. Currently, the Concerto only have 1 movement, Presto - Vivace - Presto - Allegro. (Please tell me if you want me to write 1/ 2 more movements:D) This is my very first concerto of this kind, and I am tempted to experiment the balance between Strings and Piano. I also attempt to use some chromatics and implement my favourite tuplet-against-duplet rhythmic pattern throughout the piece. Not sure if both techniques are appropriately done? This is my first time writing excerpts for Solo Piano, and I think I made it feasible as possible? Will it be too easy for a pianist to show-off? (I suppose someone will say so:P) Also, what do you think about the music in general? Particularly the development? Thank you! Sepharite Posted October 13, 2017 Posted October 13, 2017 I'm not sure if it's the sound fonts but I found it very difficult to distinguish the sounds of the strings, it sounded a bit cluttered and muffled to me. The beginning was hard to understand, but when it reached the D section. It was beautiful legato section with romantic sounds. G section reminded me of Bartok, very nice. Overall, it's a very interesting piece but I had trouble understanding some sections as they became cluttered with sound. Might I recommend thinning out the orchestration, and expanding as you develop versus having everyone come in at once at the beginning. Quote
zhenkang Posted October 13, 2017 Posted October 13, 2017 I also agree that the sounds is a bit muffled to me. I hope there can be woodwinds also with the strings. Maybe you can do some fanfare or introduction at the start before the piano solo. Quote
HoYin Cheung Posted October 18, 2017 Author Posted October 18, 2017 Thank you all for the comments! @Sepharite @zhenkang The muffling sound may due to my Soundfont (Orchestra Soundfont 2 COMBO), and/or my average Mixing techniques:P I tried changing the Panorama Position and Reverbs of the instruments. The fixed version is as follows and I am not sure if it makes the strings less blurred. @zhenkang Thank you for the response! At the moment, I am not too familiar with the Winds and more experimentation is needed. So I didn't add the wind section this time. I surely will add the Wind section in the future to make the piece richer in texture ;) @ilv Thank you for the appreciation! I cannot find a good appropriate term for this kind of concerto though, but it's definitely contemporary since the orchestra is not necessarily an accompaniment of the Piano:) MP3 Play / pause JavaScript is required. 0:00 0:00 volume > next menu Piano_Concerto_1___I_(mixfix) > next Quote
Maarten Bauer Posted October 19, 2017 Posted October 19, 2017 On 16-10-2017 at 12:28 AM, ilv said: Nice modern piano concerto! It's not the vortuosic type of concerto, though. I don't remember the name of this type of concerto. You can check out @Maarten Bauer's piano concerto called Octaves to find the answer. Unfortunately, I cannot remember the name neither. Maybe you, HoYin, can take a look at my piano concerto, so that you get the idea of an 'interactive piano concerto,' as I will call it now. In the interactive piano concerto there is a fine balance between the strings and the piano, so there is not a real soloist. One might speak of a Concerto for piano and strings. https://www.youngcomposers.com/t35525/piano-concerto-octaves/ Quote
