Maarten Bauer Posted October 31, 2017 Posted October 31, 2017 Hello, I just discovered the B minor Overture, Op.2 by the Dutch composer Johannes Verhulst. In my opinion, this is a very nice early romantic piece. Score: http://petrucci.mus.auth.gr/imglnks/usimg/1/18/IMSLP463684-PMLP752959-Verhulst_Overture_in_B_minor.pdf Quote
Maximus Posted October 31, 2017 Posted October 31, 2017 It has a faint Beethoven vibe to it, especially when the woodwinds are passing the melody around. Quote
Maximus Posted October 31, 2017 Posted October 31, 2017 Was this Overture based on a specific play or story? Quote

I have done some research, but I haven't found anything about the piece. When Mendelssohn visited Holland, he saw Verhulst's Ouverture and he offered Verhulst to teach him (Verhulst). Quote
bkho Posted November 6, 2017 Posted November 6, 2017 I agree about the Beethoven influence. Reminds me a little of Beethoven's Egmont Overture. Quote
