Dean Taylor Posted March 8, 2018 Posted March 8, 2018 hello a beginnner asks for insights into a pop composition, Time After Time...here it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nIVjCJ3jNDw does the piece stay in one key throughout, or 'modulate' to a (temporary?) minor...specificaly interested in the chord structure, those chord changes as they occur in that key's harmonized scale... thank you Quote
Monarcheon Posted March 9, 2018 Posted March 9, 2018 The entire song is C major. What might be confusing is that the song uses idiomatic chords within the key. The iii chord, for example, has a passing tone of F#, which belongs in E minor, not C major, as it would be a raised fourth. The chord progression at the beginning: Fsus2 - Gsus4 - Em11 - Fsus2 or IV - V - iii - IV Obviously there are changes throughout the song, like using a V/vi to transition to the IV on numerous occasions, use of the V/V for transition to a dominant pedal, instances of the vi, etc.. The piece doesn't change that much as it goes chordally. If that's the case, then you need to look beyond the chords to find what's interesting about it. Quote
