Battlegun Posted April 1, 2018 Posted April 1, 2018 Hello all! I recently partook in a composing challenge as stated above. In the limited time-span to create these songs, I'm interested in how fluid my composition skills are compared to when I'm not under pressure. Most of the these songs are short, so please take a listen to all of them if you have the time. 5-Day Composing Challenge | Klaviam Quote
Monarcheon Posted April 29, 2018 Posted April 29, 2018 I'm going to focus on 1 and 5: 1: The different starting points of your main riff is a really nice touch and implies new harmony when it might be ambiguous. It changes quite a bit almost right when it needs to. My only suggestion here is to change up the timbres on your guitar a little bit when operating under the softer parts of the song are least double them without phase transition. I would also work on implying F minor a little less at all times. 5: I heard "go go power rangers" a lot with your melody here. The electric bass is wonderfully subtle with your harmony in the homophonic melody. The form is a little bit off; I would have suggested something a bit more rounded than sonata-style, especially with how short each is. Could easily add a final tonic note to the end instead of the cutoff on VII. Quote
Gustav Johnson Posted May 1, 2018 Posted May 1, 2018 I took a listen to these when you posted them, didn't have a chance to comment - mybad! I also listened to a couple of your other works, pretty nice stuff in general. You know your stuff. Overall well done with your project. My recommendation now is to go back and do a 5 days of editing challenge, then maybe a 5 days of finishing challenge. There's some potential in here, bring it out and make it shine. 1 is okay. Echoing Monarcheon, the sounds are most in need of address here. Sounds live, while the rest sound computer generated. If so, learn up some about the timbre of your recording, check out to see the spectrum of sound you're making with your effects and you'll learn how to manage the sounds for better effect. 2 reminds me a little of some of the pulsing stuff from Stranger Things, if it was recorded with "older" sounds it'd be a perfect fit for that genre. I really like the back and forth between your synth chord blasts and the rhythmic groove, not sure that I liked every envelope starting the same though. I don't know how to be that specific myself or I'd offer the advice here, but something to listen for I suppose. I would have loved to hear your percussive beats match the care you took with everything else. It was functional, and well done, but everything else was beyond that which made it seem lack-luster. 3 is nice. Nothing groundbreaking or bad either. A nice piece. 4 haha! This is great, I love the variety within your works. Be careful you don't set an idea to "loop" and just forget about it. There are moments when a slight alteration to the rhythmic groove to play off the melody or percussion would really have set something off. Think in the idea of threes. If for the first two phrases you have an idea, the third time it's presented should feel different in some way. 5 cute, fun, can't add much to what's already been said. Keep it up!
