Lily

Hi each,

It's a long time since I posted a new piece, I've been working other things, but I have got this one to a stage I'm considering finished.  However, there is always room for editing and polishing.

It's a short Piano Sonata that was inspired by one of my cats "Lily".  She's a bit skitty and at times quite timid.  We have quite a zoo here with 4 cats, 2 dogs, 5 chickens and a duck, but Lily is always on her own, she prefers it that way.

Anyway, as always I would welcome any constructive criticism and suggestions on what may or may not be working.  I do value the comments I get from people and always try to act on them in some way.

I know that my style is not to everyone's taste, being classical and tonal, but I do try quite hard to give it my own voice within these constraints and I hope that it shows.

Just a quick update for you Youngc, I'm currently trying to tidy the score up, it's a bit of a mess.  The score that I've presented here is used to drive a decent playback in Sibelius, but it's not really a pianists score.  I'm a bit busy with other things just now, but once I get the score done, I'll post the new version here if still fancy learning it.  Meanwhile, if you notice things that are not done well, then don't hesitate to tell me, I may well overlook lots of errors while I rewrite, so any help is always appreciated.

I'm giving this thread a little bump, in the hopes that someone might have something to say.  I didn't think it was so bad as to not warrant anyone's comments, but if so, then fair enough.

I don't know about music theory, so I can only say if it sounds good. I can say that this is definitely a very interesting sonata and enjoyable to listen to in my opinion.

Thanks very much edfgi,  I'm glad you enjoyed it.  In the end, the only thing that really counts, regardless of how good or bad the score is written, it whether people like it or not.

As I said earlier,   I was really pleased that "youngc" was interested in learning the piece and so I wanted to work on tidying it up as it was quite messy.  I'm sure there will still be a few errors but it does look a lot cleaner and easier to read.  So just incase you're still interested, here's the new link.

Bravo. I think it's excellent. I enjoyed the whole piece. The adagio is very beautiful.

The score is very clean. I only miss some expression slurs... I guess there are legato parts.

Yes, I don't have a lot of slurring as Sibelius seems to apply it too heavily for the piano, or maybe I'm just doing something wrong, but you're right, there are lots of legato passages, and I really should mark that properly.

Normally, I would say that there are too many broken chords, but in your piece, it does not disturb me at all. 
The music sounds VERY romantic and I believe that I can hear your love for Lily (and the other animals).
The modulations are wonderful and effective too! 

The contrast between the fast part and slow part is a very good choice. 

The only feedback I can give is that I would have liked some more indications in the form of articulation.

Firstly let me apologise for not getting that sax piece done.  Believe it or not, I have started quite a few times, but I just haven't been able to finish any of the ideas I started.  You never know, one day when the spirit takes me.  This is one of the reasons I could never be a professional, I have to wait until the muse is upon me, I can't really do it to order lol.  Also, I usually have 5 or 6 pieces in development at any one time and so that also slows down the completion of any one of them.

Secondly, thank you very much for your comments, I really appreciate it.  

As Luis also said, I really do need to go back and put some direction in the score as far as articulation goes.

I am actually working on a couple of orchestral pieces at the moment, but you know better than most, not to hold your breath while waiting LOL.

Hello Mark,

First of all, sorry for my late reply.

Don't feel sorry about the saxophone piece. There is no deadline and it is no must.
Only do and start it when you want it yourself. If you need help, I always want to answer your questions!

To be honest, I cannot compose music to order too. . . That will be one of the main struggles at the conservatorium, I fear.
My solution is to travel to a location that I do not know very well. Then the ideas and inspiration come back.

A piano sonata very original and, at the same time, in perfect romantic style. A very interesting and nice work!

Thanks eternum, I'm glad you enjoyed it.  My style does tend quite heavily toward the romantic period, but hey, it's what I like. 😀
