Excellent - you transitioned between different techniques so effortlessly and smoothly.  It has a happy, smiley feel. Just what I need as I listen to the 'soul crushing' news on TV..

Played fine for me.  I didn't get what you mean by your 2nd post - mistake..  You can go in and delete that 2nd post to avoid confusion..

I guess you are right. On a lot of sites, you can 'edit' your post again, and there is a 'delete' function.. But I guess there isn't at YC..  Oh well,  sorry for the false info.

WOW!!!! This is fantastic! Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers would have been perfect for this. You are an enormous talent! Thanks for keeping great music and great arrangements alive... gives me hope that beautiful music will someday return. No reason young people can’t dig this stuff.. it’s melodic and interesting at a gut level. Bravo!!! terrific piece, I just wish it were longer.

I wrote this for my demo reel so tried to keep it short and concise. 

Another saying about music I've always loved, and it's so true for me.. I don't make music because I like to, I do it because I have to.     I do love creating music (as obviously everyone here does).. But it is so engrained into me, at an almost primal level.  I HAVE to do it..  Listening to your piece again.. Yes, it is VERY GOOD.. What I love about great music is - it gets you right away.. And on subsequent listens, you notice more details, you missed, which makes the piece even more dear.

Okay, how did you get this performed by a live orchestra? Did you hire them, or are you a student in a music school?

Was this just a reading? If so, it's even more impressive.

When I write for orchestra (using Sibelius), I get to listen to the piece over and over as I compose, so that I can be sure that every note is correct. But that still doesn't mean that it will sound good with an actual orchestra. The balance can be off, some instruments may be in an uncomfortable range and sound strident, I may have chosen bad articulations, etc., etc.; the possibilities for being disappointed are boundless.

I don't hear any of those problems here. Everything sounds very professional. So this brings up my last two questions. Is this recording the first time you heard it performed, or did you get a reading, make some adjustments, and then have it played again? How close is this recording to what you heard in your head as you composed it?

Sorry to be pummeling you with these questions, but I don't have access to a orchestra, and I'm really curious about these issues.

great questions! I’m happy to answer as best as I can. 

I work professionally as an orchestrator/arranger. This was recorded in two takes in one of my recent recording sessions. First take was sight reading for the players. Second take they got in the groove and I think there was also a third take of just the ending. The separate ending has been edited together with the second take. 

It’s been recorded in the studio I use for most of the films I do with the same engineers and conductor. This mix is by a new engineer though and I’m extremely happy with what he did and he’s now working on some of my other stuff.

Since I have done this quite some time now, there are no real surprises for me. How I write it is how I want it to sound despite what Sibelius playback might tell me. In fact I often mute the playback!

Since I was a student I have done recording sessions with my friends where we shared a session and got half an hour each. Those times I learned a lot! Every time something didn’t align with my expectations or the process didn’t go as I planned I learned something valuable and it all prepared me to do this now. 

If you have five or six friends that compose I can highly recommend booking a session with a professional recording orchestra! (Not the services that offer the sessions shared in advance). It probably costs the same as a couple of college books but what you learn from them is infinitely times more valuable and relevant to you!

Is this piece going to appear in a movie or video production soon? If so, I have two more questions. 1) What guidelines were you given; were you shown any part of the production or video clips before you started composing? 2) How long did it take from first receiving the assignment to completing the recording?

The piece was composed and recorded for my demo reel only. It's not gonna be played anywhere else. I composed it purely based on my own aesthetics. I wrote it in a couple of hours.

When doing comisioned work for media productions I either have conversations with the director/producer of the musical intent and drama of the story before writing demos or I get temp music that sort of matches the intention.

Bryla, this piece sounds so totally authentic that I wanted it to be from a movie of which I could buy the DVD. Nothing sounds out of place or superfluous. It is as though you know this kind of music inside out - and from the fact that you say that you wrote it in a couple of hours, I guess that you really do know the genre very well indeed.

I enjoyed it a lot. Well done.

I've played this kind of music since I was a teenager so it's sort of natural to me 🙂
