Marc Deflin Posted July 21, 2018 Posted July 21, 2018 Hi all 😉 I tried here to go symphonic (more used to chamber ensembles). Just let me know what you think Regards MP3 Play / pause JavaScript is required. 0:00 0:00 volume > next menu Symphonic study n°1 > next Quote
Some Guy That writes Music Posted July 21, 2018 Posted July 21, 2018 There are lots of great things here. You set a nice mood throughout, you used lots of motives and imitation which helped make each line familiar, and a good choice of instruments for melodies. But, I feel like it was put together at a different time, and by then you had 'forgotten' your flow. It feels like you a lot of whole notes for supporting harmonies, when in change, you could do some ornamental things occasionally, like a quarter-eighth- quarter-dottedquarter. It feels like to me personally, that it lacks interest in the majority of instruments. Certainly, some neutral space is needed for the listener to breathe and not get overwhelmed, but you need to find the right mix. This can be achieved by mixing the different heartbeats of the music more indepthly. Bach did this a lot, he had eighth-eighth-eighth-eighth and quarter-quarter and half all at once every measure to avoid this. Quote
Marc Deflin Posted July 24, 2018 Author Posted July 24, 2018 Thanks for your feedback SGTwM, Yeah it's true this one lacks some ornamental things. I myself got aware of this while composing it, but carried away by the flow I didn't remedy it. I'll try to keep that in mind for my second study I'm currently in. This may also be due to my software, with which I struggle to make each line sound distinctly (I'm using simple Finale with Garritan). Do you think I'll need a proper soundcard or something ? Quote
PDdLB Posted July 29, 2018 Posted July 29, 2018 I would say that it doesn't sound bad at all, but a little "flat" to me; if you only want to create an overall mood (for a movie for instance) it can work, but when you listen to the piece alone, something seems to be missing, some flow that would lead the whole piece. But if what you have works for you, keep it. If you're thinking about changing that feel free. I use the Finale Garriton sounds as-well and I'm pleased with them myself so I've never found a need myself. Quote

Ok , thanks for advising. I'll try to take this into account. Maybe a general theme missing ? Quote
