Guest Nickthoven Posted September 4, 2006 Posted September 4, 2006 Thanks, Mike, for sort of taking over while I was busy not being here...! Anyway, whitekran, like Mike said, I'm afraid you're too late. Anyway, do any of the contestants have any suggestions for the deadline for submissions? I'm thinking at least a month...
Guest whitekran101 Posted September 5, 2006 Posted September 5, 2006 yea, np nickthoven, i figured i was, thought i'd ask though good luck to everyone, i'll publish my piece a lil later on
Maximilian Caldwell Posted September 5, 2006 Posted September 5, 2006 Speaking of deadlines, when are the contestants' works going to be sent to the respective judges? And when should we judges post our emails? PS. I highly recommend The Divine Comedy (esp. the inferno) for people looking for texts that speak Italian (the people, not the texts). Click  for a link to the Italian text and translations.

Daniel Posted September 7, 2006 Posted September 7, 2006 Gah school is so hectic at the minute that I don't know if I'll be able to get anything finished. I'll probably just end up writing a short SATB Kyrie or Credo.. good as a partwriting exercise anyway.
Guest Anders Posted September 7, 2006 Posted September 7, 2006 Heh. I've been writing variations for soprano and piano. Trying to make it as accessible and banal, yet somewhat accomplished, as possible. It extracts melodies from a very skeletal motivic opening. I hate the piece so far, but I like to think of it as fairly successfull... Progress is halted at the moment.
Lord Sorasen Posted September 8, 2006 Posted September 8, 2006 Uh, aren't you atheist? But music is universal, regardless of topic.
Maximilian Caldwell Posted September 8, 2006 Posted September 8, 2006 But music is universal, regardless of topic. Well yes, it is, but more imporantly, I see the skill in Dante's texts and consider them to merely be some of the most imaginative fiction ever written in the history of civilization. I doubt the 'vision' he had was even authentic. But he was a genius, and none of us is any the wiser whether or not he did, in fact, have a vision.
Maximilian Caldwell Posted September 10, 2006 Posted September 10, 2006 I can't wait to hear what wonderful music everybody has! This is so exciting, especially since I like vocal/choral music particuarily! Though that would figure, as I am a librettist...

I don't think he had that vision either, as I don't believe in Hell.
The Baroque Enthusiast Posted September 10, 2006 Posted September 10, 2006 Well yes, it is, but more imporantly, I see the skill in Dante's texts and consider them to merely be some of the most imaginative fiction ever written in the history of civilization. I doubt the 'vision' he had was even authentic. But he was a genius, and none of us is any the wiser whether or not he did, in fact, have a vision. His journey through the depths of Hell is more of a physical manifestation of the depths of the inner self, and he invites the reader to take this journey of self-examination along with him, to overcome that which blocks our path. It's all right there on the first few pages! :) - BE
Guest Nickthoven Posted September 11, 2006 Posted September 11, 2006 Does anyone have a problem with Wednesday, October 18th for the deadline? Once this is all confirmed I will contact the judges on how this should go down. I'll send people a pm about the date once it is confirmed, as well. And I'll put up a poll about the deadline, which I just did. :D
Daniel Posted September 11, 2006 Posted September 11, 2006 Yes - my problem is that that is too early for me :S I will try to get done what I can, but I've been busy, and am busy, and haven't actually started yet.
Danny Cass Posted September 14, 2006 Posted September 14, 2006 I would love to join, Composing a piece with text is somthing i have dabbled little in. A positive submmision date would be appriciated so i know when my time limit for composing is. oh, we can write our own text right ? also if i use notepad then the file will be mus. and the judges will be able to read the text as well as listen to the music right. If I'm wrong with any of this please inform me.
Guest Anders Posted September 14, 2006 Posted September 14, 2006 The deadline for this competition is LONG GONE i'm afraid!
Mike Posted September 14, 2006 Posted September 14, 2006 No reason why you shouldn't be able to, Chris. What's the problem exactly? And you're sure you haven't already voted?
Mike Posted September 15, 2006 Posted September 15, 2006 "Voters: 3. You may not vote on this poll" Sorry, it was a permissions issue. You should be able to vote now.
Maximilian Caldwell Posted September 16, 2006 Posted September 16, 2006 I think October 18th is a fine date, if not the 11th. I was under the impression that the choral piece, while with no particularily specific guidelines, would only need to be a 3-8 minute piece, i.e. one movement, so as not to take up much of one person's time.
Maximilian Caldwell Posted September 18, 2006 Posted September 18, 2006 And btw, is it a requirement that a person provide a MIDI? Because if it isn't, that would be :) VERY :w00t: nice for some of us less fortunate people that have Dial-Up...:(
