Walter Piston Harmony Exercise Question

Hi,

Can anyone help explain what Walter Piston is asking for in the exercise below. When he says "chord succession" does he mean progression? Also when he says "in four parts" does he mean in four part harmony or four different variations? Any help would be appreciated.

I think he means progression.

Again, I think he means in four-part harmony. It doesn't seem to have the same 'exercise potential' if it is four different variations.
