lester
hi I would like to post a composition, but people can steal it if I post it, right? How do people solve that problem?
Mike
Are you talking about an MP3 or a MIDI? MP3s and other such formats are more difficult to plagiarise, so if people stealing your work is a concern, you might be best going with just that format. Be advised however that people will find your music more difficult to review if they can't actually see it in front of them.
Guest JohnGalt
By attaching the copyright symbol to a work, in the US, you are forming a Common Law Copyright. The process for getting a full copyright takes a long time, as the US Copyright Office gets a lot of submissions.
chopin
By attaching the copyright symbol to a work, in the US, you are forming a Common Law Copyright. If you are the true author of a work, you already own copyright. The problem with that is, someone else can steal the work, and formally purchase copyrights, then YOU have no proof that you are the true author. Putting a little c next to your work isn't really necessary and does nothing to assure saftey. As Mike said, upload mp3's...that is what I do. I would even think it would be safe to upload midis, as long as you have your original finale or sibelius files. I have sheet music to my music, but I am not afraid to upload the midi's because in most cases, it is too much of a pain, and sometimes impossible to reproduce the sheet music. The process for getting a full copyright takes a long time, as the US Copyright Office gets a lot of submissions. As far as I know, it takes 6 months to get an official seal...but as soon as the Library of Congress recieves your payment with your scores, it is immediately protected. Nightfly
At first I also thought on the same issue and then I said, what the hell, sooner or later we need to introduce our music to the world, and share and disguss thoughts. As far as I see, the best oportunity is here.
lester
I'm not sure if the work could be in the 'major works' forum,(It's only 3 minutes, but I have put a lot of work in it (It's only the first movement)) but if you want to get critics there, you need to have a score. So like Mike said, that would be a problem... My work isn't that good somebody would steal the complete work, but maybe they can steal little pieces or something... but I have no experience in posting works on the internet. If you attach a little c, where should you put it? (If somebody sees the little c, they will think twice before stealing something, I think) Has there ever been a case of somebody stealing something on this site? All the posts in the 'major works' forum, are they copyrighted? I made it with sibelius, so in any case I can post a midi file... (It's a stringquintet, so it's impossible to reproduce i think)
lester
I'm convinced... I'll just post it... I'll just make a little changes, It will be posted tomorow...(or today maybe) (I just noticed we're in a total different time zone... Now It's midnight where I am)
Guest JohnGalt
It's once been said "Good composers borrow, great composers steal." I completely disagree, but stealing bits and pieces is nothing to get uptight about. Everyone does it...i think. Oh, by the way - I, too, am writing a string quintet, so I'm anxious to hear. Hehe, Stravinsky said that, and I can't agree more. *glares at John Williams*
lester
I can't deside if I should place the piece in the 'major works' forum or in the 'chamber music' forum... What should I do?

lester
I THINK it's okay to put it in the major works. I'll try in there and I'll write they can move me to another forum if they think it isn't good enough...
