Mike Posted August 24, 2006 Author Posted August 24, 2006 In the meantime, some examples of the newly-introduced purple... Would be interested to get feedback on this. http://www.youngcomposers.com/forum/style_images/purple1.png http://www.youngcomposers.com/forum/style_images/purple2.png (Focus your eye on the buttons in the second one) Quote
Daniel Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 Hmm. It's good, but it almost spoils the effect, having so little of it there. But the colour in itself works well with the beiges and oranges and what have you. Quote
Nightfly Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 I liked it, I think it is begining to look better. I liked that you put purple only to the icons. I think it's better to use only one color apart from brown to make it consistent. And purple seemed to fit well. have you tried to make the background of the posts white ? just the posts not the other bits. Quote
Guest JohnGalt Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 The shade of purple used looks out of place to me against the other colors. I like having the highlights, but not so much the current choice. Quote
musicman15 Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 PAY to upload music .MP3 man where is this community heading... i agree. Quote
Guest JohnGalt Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 i agree. /sigh No one can use rational thought anymore? Uploading MP3's takes space. Space the forums don't have, or won't have when they get a lot. Also, hosting the mp3's on the server requires bandwidth used in streaming them. Bandwidth = money. Quote
bob stole my cookie Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 I think the touch of purple on brown looks quite sexy. :D Quote
giselle Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 Hmm. I still think the classic YC colours should stay as at least an option. yes pleeeease...the classic YC colors, to me, are like that comfy old chair, blanket, sweatshirt...whatever, I just feel at home with the classic colors. I neeeed them. Quote
montpellier Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 The font size seemed a bit small on Mike's examples. I noted though that the local library were offering old microfiche readers. I'll need one to read the new forums! A small subscription for MP3 space seems okay though I've got used to soundclick. I presume one could still link to such a site within a post. Quote
Daniel Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 I'm almost sure all that fontsize stuff can be adjusted isntantly by holding Ctrl, and moving the mouse scroll-wheel. So it's not a problem with the forum, it's just Mike must have hawk-like eyes  Quote

If just the post backgrounds were white, it would look a little something like this, which I'm sure you'll agree isn't too snazzy. Or perhaps you meant whiter? The shade of purple used looks out of place to me against the other colors. I like having the highlights, but not so much the current choice. What shades might you suggest using instead then? Lighter ones? Darker ones? Bluer ones? Violeter ones? yes pleeeease...the classic YC colors, to me, are like that comfy old chair, blanket, sweatshirt...whatever, I just feel at home with the classic colors. I neeeed them. Just like that old blanket of yours, the old YC skin is being whisked off, placed in a hot wash, sanitized, then returned to you smelling sweeter than ever. With blackcurrent flavoured buttons, no less. The font size seemed a bit small on Mike's examples. I noted though that the local library were offering old microfiche readers. The font probably looks small because of my resolution, which is likely larger than most other people's. Here's a like-for-like comparison of the current post row with the new post row:http://www.youngcomposers.com/forum/style_.../comparison.png So as you can see, the sizes are the same. None of these screenshots are actual size by the way, as I'm having to downsize them by about 30% each time. Quote

Guest JohnGalt Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 Hm, I would learn towards a deeper purple, personally. When I looked right at the highlights, they were fine, but when I left the page fall out of focus, or looked at the whole page at once, they just looked out of place. Quote
Mike Posted August 24, 2006 Author Posted August 24, 2006 Quick note... I really hate checking for messages, and then trying to get to the homepage really quick to mark all posts as read before someone makes a new post. Perhaps that button could be put on the view new posts page? Oddly enough, this option is already available on IPB's View New Posts page (click "Mark all forums as read and return to index" on the far right of the brown title bar), but it doesn't appear to be available in vB's equivalent. I'll be sure to add it in before we go live. Hm, I would learn towards a deeper purple, personally. When I looked right at the highlights, they were fine, but when I left the page fall out of focus, or looked at the whole page at once, they just looked out of place. Yeah, I think you're right. What's your opinion on the purple used in the first screenshot though, the one with the purple ink pot on the "New Thread" button? I think this could only feasibly be darkened a fraction more before it becomes almost black to the casual observer. But I'll get onto darkening the rest of the shades.By the way, we've encountered a bug with the database conversion utility, which will unfortunately delay the switch over. Quote
Mike Posted August 24, 2006 Author Posted August 24, 2006 http://www.youngcomposers.com/forum/style_images/darker.png http://www.youngcomposers.com/forum/style_...s/forumview.png Darkened the shades a bit in the first example. Also changed the down arrow on menus to a deeper shade of purple, wondering whether it's too much of a bold statement... Second example show the forum view, you'll notice little bits of purple dotted around there. Purple on "New Thread" button is actually darker than all the rest now, may change this later. Quote
Daniel Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 Still looking good. The purple seems fine, but it isn't going to make a huge difference what shade of purple is. I'm loving the left-alignment :P Quote
Guest Anders Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 Looks good so far! Would it be possible to allign the member information under the avatar, as it is here? Quote

Mike Posted August 25, 2006 Author Posted August 25, 2006 Looks good so far! Would it be possible to allign the member information under the avatar, as it is here? Doing this would cause the member information row to gain too much height.Demonstration: http://www.youngcomposers.com/forum/style_...underavatar.png Still trying to figure out what would look good for the arrows. In regard to the database conversion, a vBulletin staff member should be taking a look at our setup later on today in an attempt to diagnose the problem we've been having. So, if he gets it working, we could feasibly have a conversion test run today and make the full switch within a couple of days. Quote
Guest Anders Posted August 25, 2006 Posted August 25, 2006 No, no. Ugh. :D I meant something like this : http://www.squaresound.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7632 EDIT: What she said. Quote
bob stole my cookie Posted August 25, 2006 Posted August 25, 2006 I think he meant have the entire section on the left as we have it here, with the two vertical cells instead of having the member information on top of the post. Is that possible? Quote
Mike Posted August 25, 2006 Author Posted August 25, 2006 Ah, that would probably require a completely different (and custom) skin, then. Or, just some re-jigging of the current one. I'll see what I can do. Quote
Mike Posted August 25, 2006 Author Posted August 25, 2006 Hmm, I think it would be best to download a pre-made skin with that formatting and then either use it as an aid or apply the new CSS/images to it. I'm not keen on using the link you provided as an aid, Letehn, as I just ran it through the W3 markup validator and discovered that there are over 450 errors. A few don't really matter, but 450+ really isn't best practice. I can't download new skins until I get customer access to the vB community forums though. Will work on that in a sec. Quote
bob stole my cookie Posted August 25, 2006 Posted August 25, 2006 Nice new avatar  DO you think there is any way to put a count-down timer on the flood control page? I hate having to stare blankly at the screen and count to 10  Quote
