Dylan Posted November 19, 2019 Posted November 19, 2019 Hello, I just wrote fifth species counterpoint and would love for someone to look it over for me. I did my best to follow the rules but want to double check. I am not done but am close to being done. I just want to make sure i've done it correctly and if you have any tips to finish or fix mistakes. Thanks Dylan https://imgur.com/a/mfGbuul Quote
Monarcheon Posted November 19, 2019 Posted November 19, 2019 Lots of 4ths. Not wrong most of the time, but be careful; in Fux's time, emphasizing the fourth via 5-4 suspension is an accented dissonance without proper preparation. Leaps should be followed by stepwise motion in the opposite direction (i.e. mm. 7-8). Leaping away from a dissonance is also not the best (i.e. m. 5). Quote
Luis Hernández Posted November 24, 2019 Posted November 24, 2019 Yes, you should avoid 4ths in strong positions as in measure 4 A - D at the beginning. I find this methods tiresome and useless (Fux or whatever of those ages). Yes, you need to have some concepts very clear: consonant intervals, dissonant intervals, chord tones and non-chord tones. And focus on that and motive manipulation. Quote
