Daniel Posted November 24, 2005 Author Posted November 24, 2005 Ok, I've finally worked out what my (current) favourite piano concerto is. Mozart 27. I just think its the summit of his great piano concertos, and it's one of his more romantic concertos. Sometimes I don't like listening to Mozart concertos because they're too slight in comparison with the romantic ones, but i dont get that with this one. It's such a grand piece that i feel it holds its own against the romantic concertos. It's just fantastically written, and very expressive and emotive. Plus the Mozart cadenzas survive which is always a plus. I'd go as far as to say it's the best Bb major piano concerto ever written. Let's say how I get beaten down now :) Don't bring up Brahms, lol. Also, Beethoven's 5th has gone up alot in my estimation (just due to the last movement). Imo, Mozart wrote the best piano concerto 1st movements, and Beethoven wrote the best piano concerto 3rd movements. But that's just me... let's see what anyone says... Quote

RequiemAeternam Posted January 1, 2006 Posted January 1, 2006 By far, not in any order: Brahms 2, Brahms 1, Beethoven 5, 4, Mozart 20, 21, 23, 24, 25, Bach D minor, are the greatest but if I HAD to pick 5........almost impossibly difficult but if I simply had to then: in order: 1. Brahms 1 2. EMPEROR (nuff said lol) 3. Mozart #23 4. Brahms 2 5. Beethoven 4 These all I consider absolutely 'perfect' works in the sense that EVERY movement is untouchable as opposed to many other works that are pure masterpieces but might have a slightly weaker movement or two. Funny though that the concerto at my #1 spot is actually the weakest of all (it's last movement is famously weak) but it was also written by the youngest composer by far of anyone on that list (Mozart was in his late 20's when he wrote the 'great concertos', Beethoven was in his mid 30's when he wrote 4 and 5, Brahms was arguably 20 when he first started the D minor) and so it is excusable on those terms. Daniel Posted January 1, 2006 Author Posted January 1, 2006 Mozart was in his late 20's when he wrote the 'great concertos' He wrote the 'Jeunehomme' when he was younger than Brahms writing the d minor. It is a truly great concerto. Quote
bOrbOt Posted January 10, 2006 Posted January 10, 2006 My Top 5 Would be Rachmaninoff - Piano Concerto No.3 (Best recording is by Arcadi Volodos) Beethoven - Piano Concerto No.4 (Great depiction of Beethoven's struggle to overcome deafness) Rachmaninoff - Piano Concerto No.2 Beethoven - Piano Concerto No.5 (Third Movement finishes the concerto superbly) CPE Bach - Concerto In D Minor Wq.22 Quote

C J. Posted November 10, 2006 Posted November 10, 2006 For me the 3 best piano concertos are Chopin's first piano concerto, Saint saens piano concerto (i don't know the number but it's the most knowed) and Rachmaninnoff the second. Arniszt: Saint Saens (I'm guessing) its No 4 in Cminor. As for my own Favorites: Sergei Rochmaninnoff Concerto No 2. Edvard Grieg's Piano Concerto in A minor. Fredric Chopin Piano Concerto in E minor. Husband and Wife Below: Robert Schuman: Piano Concerto in A minor. Clara Schuman: Piano Concerto in A minor. Father and Son below: WA Mozart - Piano concerto No 20 in D minor, the "Coronation" Concerto (thinks its No 22 - but not certain.) FXW Mozart - Piano Concerto in C major Op.14 Quote
Daniel Posted November 10, 2006 Author Posted November 10, 2006 Coronation is #26 (Well actually there are two. #19 and #26, but it's generally taken as 26) Is Franz Xaver's work any good? I've never had the chance to listen to any of his music. Quote
C J. Posted November 10, 2006 Posted November 10, 2006 Coronation is #26 (Well actually there are two. #19 and #26, but it's generally taken as 26)Is Franz Xaver's work any good? I've never had the chance to listen to any of his music. Yes, very much so. A little info: FXW Mozarts known works amount to around only twenty. The highlights of these are two piano concertos, two sonatas for Violin and Cello apiece, a wind Quintet, a Rondo for Flute and Piano. He had some great teachers: among them Salieri, Hummel, Albrectsberger and Volger. He was a man whose fathers and grandfathers reputations, served more to overwhelm and haunt him in life, which is why he really didn't write much music. One of his lesser known contributions to musical literature was a variation he wrote for a symphonic work "Variations on a theme of Diabelli" in which other composers also submitted a variation of theirs. Schubert, Schumann, Weber and Hummel to mention a few of the others involved. The number was about 50 composers total. Recordings are really hard to come by, but I lucked out while listening to our local Classical music station one day :( I tried to get a Deutche Grammophone recording of his concerto but evedently its out of print. teccomin Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 Greatest Piano Concerto has to be Beethoven's 4th, it opened the gateway to the romantic era. His 5th is equally good, but too bad it came after the 4th. Nevertheless my favourite 5 are: 1. Schumann 1st (its just sublime) 2. Rachmaninoff 2nd (one of my favourite melodies of all genres) 3. Beethoven 4th (sublime) 4. Chopin 1st and 2nd (melody makes me cry) 5. Prokofiev 2nd (needs some change of taste at times) Honorable mentions: Tchaikovsky (just cuz every1 say its good) Mozart #21 Rach 3 saint saens #2 one of Bach's Brahms 2nd (too big for me) Quote
Voce Posted March 21, 2008 Posted March 21, 2008 1. Bartok's 2nd 2. Shostakovich's 2nd 3. Prokofiev's 3rd 4. Beethoven's 4th 5. Gershwin Quote
