Ivan1791 Posted May 7, 2020 Posted May 7, 2020 (edited) I also will include pieces for solo instruments that aren't piano. The order of the pieces will be chronological. The only decent one is number 9. 1.-Song. (Piano, alto and soprano)(Classical) 2.-String preludes. (Baroque/Classical/Romantic) 3.-Greek fantasy. (Folk was the intention) 4.-Oboe impromptu. (Baroque) 5.-Sad song. 6.-Retrato musical. (Romantic)(Lied) 7.-Anger. (Experimental)(Black Midi) 8.-Piece for violin and piano. (Classical)(Only the first one) 9.-Sonata form for String Quartet. (Neoclassical) 10.-Counterpoint practice 1. (Baroque) 11.-Counterpoint practice 2. (Baroque) 12.-Adagio and joke for strings. (Romantic/Modern) Edited May 7, 2020 by Ivan1791 Quote
Tónskáld Posted May 7, 2020 Posted May 7, 2020 As I was listening to these, I probably said, "This guy is good," at least a half-dozen times. You definitely have an understanding of the subtleties of composing for the instruments in these videos, likely others, too. The counterpoint studies were especially impressive! But I enjoyed each one of them in their own right (Anger was probably my favorite—I love the use of quartals harmonies). Fantastic, Ivan, just fantastic. I'm looking forward to enjoying more of your stuff! I realize you're still experimenting with finding "your own voice," but, in my opinion, you're doing very well. P.S. I noticed some Catalan sprinkled in some of the scores. Pretty cool language. Cheers! 1 Quote

I'm really happy to see you are enjoying my music, I have quite a lot of self doubt sometimes so these comments help. Still learning new things everyday, I might try learning to play a string instrument to try to make compositions that feel more natural to that kind of instrument. Anger is a piece I did one day I got really mad about someone who disrespected me a lot, so it is probably my most sincere work haha. And yes, I speak Catalan, it is my mother tongue. I also speak Spanish and more or less English, but I would like to learn other languages like Japanese, Russian, German or French for example. (Probably not all them) Quote

Yes, piano was my main instrument until I started to learn viola a few years ago so I'd have a better understanding of stringed instruments. Same goes for the other sections: flute and clarinet for woodwinds; horn, trumpet and trombone for brass. You don't have to be proficient at them by any means, but I do think it helps as a composer to know how they're handled. A lot of musicians are also gifted at human languages, so I imagine you'll learn quite a few before all is said and done. Catalan isn't a language I know, but I do recognize it when I see it, lol. Keep up the good work! Quote

Keep up the good work! Exactly, learning to play other instruments is really helpful for composers. And nop, I'm pretty bad with languages. I'm way better with science and maths, that's a reason why I will compose some intricate works in the future. Thanks. See you soon, also if you want to chat with me send me a direct message and I will answer. Quote
