bkho Posted June 7, 2020 Posted June 7, 2020 I've been working on a piano sonata in the classical style (Mozart/early Beethoven inspired) and recently finished a draft of the third and final movement. It's intended to be in sonata-rondo form. I wonder if some of the transitions are little off and/or abrupt particularly at measures 93 and 195. Thanks for listening. Bradley Scarff Posted June 7, 2020 Posted June 7, 2020 fantastic piece well done! it has a nice fluency throughout and the theme is very well developed and worked upon. My only complaint is structurally there seems to be very little divergence between the sections. if it Is supposed to be a rondo I can't see especially in the middle where the sections divide. whether that is intentional or not I have no clue. but perhaps a more lyrical section featuring a pleasant flowing melody would work very well in the middle. Just my thoughts I enjoyed it regardless. Quote

I tried having a more contrasting episode in the middle but couldn't come up with anything too convincing. Quote
Tónskáld Posted June 9, 2020 Posted June 9, 2020 I'm sorry, Bryan (Dr. Ho). I gave this a listen yesterday, typed up my comments, walked away for a bit, and then came back and stupidly closed my browser... I love getting old. Personally, I found this delightful and well put-together. The transitions you mentioned didn't bother me—or at least I didn't notice them during my perusal—although the harmonic progressions leading up to 195 I thought sounded a little forced and not so natural. But I was listening for issues, so I'm probably just being hypersensitive. I'm happy for you now that you've finished this sonata. It truly is a great feeling to be finished with something you've worked so long on, isn't it? Quote

Sadly I still have the middle slow movement to go, I always have trouble writing slower music but very happy to have to knocked off 2 of the 3 movements. Quote

Assumptions, assumptions, assumptions. And yes, slow movements are the worst. Wish I could offer some advice to make it easier, but, alas, I have none. Best wishes, though! 1 Quote

Guillem82 Posted June 15, 2020 Posted June 15, 2020 That's really nice! The first bars motive reminds me of something I've heard before, I would say from Beethoven. Quote

Yeah, it actually is pretty similar to the opening of his sonata no. 19 in g minor. Completely unintentional. Quote
