HoYin Cheung Posted June 29, 2020 Posted June 29, 2020 Dear all, I am taking a break on my work, so I got some time to experiment with the Aleatoric music and mixes. For this soundtrack I recorded 4 samples featuring the falling sound of longer nails and shorter nails, the crushing sound of screwdrivers and the sound blowing to a bottle. I also recorded the word "nails". The reversed version is also included in the soundtrack. Do you think I should write a score based on this soundtrack? It looks cool to me. (As what a contemporary composer will do... , you know those graphical scores) Anyways, hope you like this experimental piece. Thank you. Best, HoYin Quote
HoYin Cheung Posted June 29, 2020 Author Posted June 29, 2020 @Monarcheon The music may not demonstrate much, but I wish to illustrate an idea here. While the samples are aleatoric (kind of, not from the deterministic view), the arrangements of the samples can be controlled and form a structure. As the structure is preserved, combination of the elements are permitted. For example, as long as Short Nail clip (S) is followed by Long Nail clip (L), the play speed of both clips are allowed to chosen among the choices 0.5x, 1x, 2x. S 0.5x then L 1x OR S 0.5x then L 2x OR... 6 possible combinations under the structure A bit like serialism but each elements in the series can have choices ... Quote

You seem to know that combinatorial means something specific in serialism, which is where most musicians will know that word. I don't quite think you're treading new ground with the idea of rule-altered samples, but it's good to be thinking about it. It'd be interesting to see you actually tie that and serialism together (not that it'd necessarily sound very good, but you know, it's an experiment). Quote
