Markus Boyd Posted January 13, 2021 Posted January 13, 2021 By old style, do you mean an early classical manner of composition? I personally found the work static, which features little polyphony. Some of the ideas are similar to Mozart’s first symphony. Perhaps you can provide more information about the work and what your intentions are? Quote
PeterthePapercomPoser Posted January 13, 2021 Posted January 13, 2021 You follow sonata form in this! There's a double exposition and even a development section that explores multiple keys with a recapitulation in the home key. The weakness of this symphony is that your themes are somewhat uninteresting and seem to be filling out the established harmonies. And when you're on the dominant you seem to stay there forever! Like @Markus Boyd mentioned - you could have used some countermelodies or even just passing changes in harmony would have been nice. Thanks for sharing! Quote
Andy Pattinson Posted January 13, 2021 Author Posted January 13, 2021 Thanks for the feedback, well spotted Markus, I used Mozart's first as a model. I was trying a lot of things with this piece really. I wanted to try the early classical style and write a fairly long piece with three movements. Also it is a learning curve for me to write for a small orchestra and use the Finale software. Thanks @papercomposer for the feedback too. I will look into countermelodies. Quote
