Sonata No. 2

SSC

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, I'm in the process of uploading as much of my music as I can on youtube, cuz what good does it do sitting around in my computer huh? Anyway, here's my second piano sonata as it was performed in 2016. It's divided into 3 movements and all three movements are following the typical sonata-form conventions to some degree or another. It took around 4 months to write the score and around 6 months in rehearsal time to get it performed to an acceptable degree. The third movement is specially challenging, but I think it sounds cool. Either way, have fun.

The piano sonata at the start is quite impressive, with great use of harmonies. Though I feel the range is a bit limited. Maybe you can try to vary your repeats a little by transposing an octave higher or lower?

Your themes for the various movements are also great to hear and quite interesting. Just wondering, what style are you going for for this sonata?

Well, I only really thought about the kind of sound I wanted to have rather than any kind of style. In this case, I was really into Grieg at the time so I think a bunch of that made it into the sonata. However, I tend to not really think in terms of style in general, just what kind of "feel" it's supposed to have and in this case I think I went for that kind of contrast-heavy late romantic idea.

If you can give me a concrete example it'd be great. The sonata is kind of long and I don't know which repeats you mean.

Well, like in the first movement for example, you can raise the repeat of the main theme in bar 9 to an octave higher.

Ok actually nvm, there aren't that many repetition of themes, but Im just trying to be general here. But yeah here's what I thought.
