menuet_#4.mp3Hi,

Here is another exercise-like minuet. It's maybe not very typical of the genre, since the tempo is a bit fast, and it's maybe not as regular in its rythmic elements as most minuets, so let's say it's a pseudo-minuet. Nevermind what it is really, basically just practice 🙂

As always, curious to hear your opinions/criticism

Musically I like some of the ideas, it docent necessarily have the "typical" minuet feel. I see you labeled the intervals at some places. from a contrapuntal standpoint there are some mistakes.

Hey, thanks for passing by!

Yes, as I said, it's not really following closely the minuet, that I'm not really fond of; it just kinda borrows its overall structure for a simple 2-voice writing. I am interested though in the couterpoint mistakes that you picked up in the labeled section. Could you point them out?

I just caught a parallel 8ve int he weak beats of m.20 and some mistakes in m.21, which I corrected. I will post an updated version if there are more corrections to come 🙂

Hi, you call this also an exercise.  What is the objective?  As for as the composition, for me, it lacks a clear theme (for a dance) and development and moves about too much.

The objective is to learn to compose a simple piece. I'm keeping it short and simple and trying to include different elements that I need to practice (like a more contrapunctal texture on the section B).

I hear you for the lack of a clear theme.  Although, I would say there is quite a clear theme/motif to the section A? Basically there is the motif int the mm. 1-2, and the one i m.3, that are being sequenced/varied. I was kinda ok with that first part.

The section B though, I agree that it lacks coherence with the rest, since I am quite poor at writing a constrasting section that still relates to the orginal material. Any recommandations? How to keep the unity between a section supposedly contrasting and the main "theme"?

Hi everyone,

Had a little time this weekend, so I modified the piece a little bit. I changed section B, mostly to try and make it sound more closely related to the first part, in my ongoing struggle to find a good balance betwen unity and contrast.

So here is the updated version (section A is the same so you don't have to listen t it again if you already had). Again, I don't really insist on making it particularly minuet-like, I'm mostly borrowing the repeated structure. My goal is to compose a simple piece that feels light, coherent and not unpleasant 😛
