PeterHM Posted July 27, 2021 Posted July 27, 2021 Hello there, I was able to compose this beginning of a piece but I don't know exactly where to go from here. The plagal cadence at the end sounds very final, and thats not intended, although it sounds good to my ears. I have ideas, but I was hoping someone with more experience could help. Also, any criticism is welcome. Thank you. MP3 Play / pause JavaScript is required. 0:00 0:00 volume > next menu Fantasy in D - Peter HM > next PDF Fantasy in D - Peter HM 1 Quote
Papageno Posted July 28, 2021 Posted July 28, 2021 Its beautiful, a dreamy and melancholic beginning, I particularly like the motif in bar 5 which I think could be developed in the next bar of your piece but maybe with a different pattern in the left hand for a bit more variety. The piece is descending so it makes sense to ascend next perhaps using a sequence with the bar 5 motif I mentioned. I look forward to hearing more whatever you decide to do 🙂 1 Quote
caters Posted July 28, 2021 Posted July 28, 2021 It's a beautiful piece. And yeah, I agree with @Papageno that maybe you should ascend with the motif from Bar 5. One question though, why is it called Fantasy in D when it is in D minor? It ends with a D major chord, sure, might even end with a whole D major section. But it starts in D minor and that's what dictates the key of the piece, so it should be Fantasy in D minor. And speaking of D minor fantasies, your fantasy reminds me of this Mozart fantasia: 1 Quote

Those are good suggestions, I'll try exploring that motif further, and I'll surely upload the piece when it's done. Quote

You are correct, I should have called it "Fantasy in Dm"; I think I named it before writing it, with the intention of it being in major, and later changed the tonality without changing the name. Thank you for pointing that out. And yes, Mozart's fantasy was a big inspiration. I even wanted to make a section, if not the whole ending, in D major like in Mozart's. I also stole some ideas from his Adagio in B minor K.540, his use of borrowed diminished 7th chords was new to me. Quote
