Kobea Posted September 27, 2006 Posted September 27, 2006 Does anyone here play lower instruments as their primary? I do. I have been playing tuba for almost four years now. I am in the Marching Band and Wind Ensemble. After playing this instrument for awhile, I sometimes have second thoughts on if I should have stayed with trumpet. This usually happens on a Stand Fast 32 measure blaring trumpet solo during a marching show. Ah, well, just a rant. I do like low instruments, you can feel yourself balancing the band. I also play bass. I am in the Spartanaires (my high school's show choir). I have been playing for three years. Please reply if you play/have played lower instruments and share some of your experiences. Quote
Mitchell Posted September 27, 2006 Posted September 27, 2006 well, tenor sax is KINDA low, and it was my second instrument. but i'm better with it than clarinet, flute, trombone and piano. Quote
djf Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 Trombone. I love playing low stuff, but I can't seem to get lower than about pedal A or Ab. Other than that, I'm better at low stuff on my Yamaha student horn than this year's bass trombonist is on the school's Bach bass bone. Though to be fair, he's never played bass before. Quote
Saxophoneislife Posted October 7, 2006 Posted October 7, 2006 I'd take the bassoon as my primary any day.:P Quote
CaltechViolist Posted October 7, 2006 Posted October 7, 2006 I played euphonium in high school. My main instrument is viola, which some people place in the lower strings (though others will call them upper strings)... at any rate, I think playing one of the middle voices has given me a good instinct for what makes a good middle part. I have more lower-voice experience from singing. In college I sang bass in the glee club... these days I still sing bass in Chorda Tympani, the USC med school a capella group. Quote
redbandgek22 Posted October 10, 2006 Posted October 10, 2006 I'd take the bassoon as my primary any day.:P :P :P Quote

Hands Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 its not hard,.. i played for like... 4 years? i think It's hard to play in tune, apparently. I just envy the string players their beautiful parts in the Nutcracker, and every symphony, symphonic poem, etc. Lucky bastards. Quote
Will Kirk Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 its not hard,.. i played for like... 4 years? i think I thought you disliked European instruments? Quote

Zhou Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 i focus on asian music, thats why many cant pronounce half the instruments on that list, so when i was in 3rd grade i took cello for fun Quote
James H. Posted June 22, 2007 Posted June 22, 2007 Clearly nobody here knows what constitutes a "Lower Instrument". :) I consider a "Lower Instrument" as one you can feel before you can hear, you know, the types that require you to acquire local permits to practice in your home because they tend to cause seizmic disturbances. I play horn and I suppose that instrument can play quite low by any standards, I can hit a note equivalent to low 'C' on a tuba. I'm also learning tuba, and I'll tell you, it's fun torturing a jumpy flute section with nice jarring pedal Bb's. For research on REALLY low instruments, check the Contrabass Compendium: Contrabass Compendium For those of you out there who appreciate humor concerning said instruments capable of generating highly localized seizmic activity, check the "Warning signs that you may be a contrabass maniac": You Might *Be* A Contrabass Maniac... Much fun! Quote

spherenine Posted June 22, 2007 Posted June 22, 2007 I play a bit of bass guitar and a tiny bit of upright. Mainly, though, I'm a guitarist, a.k.a. the type of guy that gets to solo while you hold down the rhythm. So, erm, thanks, bassists. Quote
