Hello! How is everyone? I've been missing for a while but I'm still enjoying trying to write music, and wondering whether I should try to learn how to do it properly 🙂

All comments as usual very very welcome. It's the first time I write for the violin, and first time I write a first movement in sonata form in a minor key. I liked both, I'm making progress on the second movement (wants to be a siciliana) but I'm totally stuck with the third! Violin Sonata 1 - Full Score.pdf

Hello!  I'm new here, thought I'd add some thoughts... As a violinist, technically the writing is good, all playable.  The only thing is, as a composer, my opinion is that the piece lacks strength melodically.  I think it would be important for you to study cadences (how to end phrases) in scores by the great composers, and just generally which steps of the scale like to resolve to which notes (if that makes sense??), to develop an elegance of movement and phrasing which sounds more refined.  I will be brutally honest - this piece sounds a bit like a technical exercise with lots of scales and arpeggios, but weak thematically, didn't personally find any memorable melodies to it.

Apologies if I have been harsh in my critique!

Regards,

Zeb.

Thank you very much Zeb!

Criticism is always welcome... I'm glad the violin part is playable (I play the piano...) Your suggestion about cadences sounds right on point but... do you have a sense of which would be a good book to study in order learn more about that?

I finished the second movement and added a third movement before the final one. I doubt they'll be any more refined than this but I'll try and post them anyways. It's always nice to get feedback here.
