PeterthePapercomPoser Posted February 18, 2022 Posted February 18, 2022 Are you French? I looked up the meaning of all the French titles to try and better understand this piece and I think that if you meant it as a programmatic piece then it does in fact sound like a cold wind especially if you intend the violinist to play sans vibrato. I also looked up "la nuit un monde" and got a French horror movie "La nuit a dévoré le monde" or "The Night Eats the World" LoL. This might be a good exercise (if you feel like it) to someday orchestrate for solo violin and chamber orchestra. Thanks for sharing! Quote
MJFOBOE Posted February 18, 2022 Author Posted February 18, 2022 Hi there - once again. No I am not French; however, the individual who asked me to compose the work is French Canadian. "La Nuit un Monde" was a program for a concert. I and others were asked to compose a work for the concert (which unfortunately did not happen). It is a programmatic work - glad you felt the cold wind. I like the idea of orchestrating the work for string orchestra! Mark 1 Quote
Tom Statler Posted February 19, 2022 Posted February 19, 2022 Well, I agree it's cold, but not sure I feel the wind. Something I'm noticing about your recently posted pieces is that they're "notey". Feels like note, note, note, note... rather than phrases. The music is serving the bar lines rather than vice versa. How about rhythmically decoupling the violin and piano parts? Let the violin change pitches on the "ands" of the beat sometimes? Leave out some notes altogether? Quote
MJFOBOE Posted February 19, 2022 Author Posted February 19, 2022 Tom - an interesting observation. These are posts of earlier works (when I first began to compose) ... I'll have to review some of my more recent compositions to see if they have similar construction and/or write something new with more interplay among the solo instrument and piano/or other ensemble. It was never meant to be a complex work and I was asked to write it within certain time parameters. Thanks for the review. Mark Quote
