bob stole my cookie Posted October 4, 2006 Posted October 4, 2006 Hate to be a bit of a bother (as usual) but.... oh well, curiosity go the better of me. I remeber that a while back, shortly after I had first joined, I came across a page that listed all the members alphabetically and under each of their names was a link to every musical attachment they had uploaded. I remember finding this useful because if I was paticularly impressed by the work of a paticular member, I could download more of their pieces without having to sort through pages of posts to get their "latest edit" ect. I was wondering if this page still exists and it not, could one be created? Quote
Mike Posted October 4, 2006 Posted October 4, 2006 Yeah, I remember what you're referring to, Hillary. I think we dropped it because it used the old main site layout which was deprecated when we moved to having everything powered by MediaWiki... I'll see if I can come up with a similar script that integrates with vBulletin at some point. Quote
bob stole my cookie Posted October 5, 2006 Author Posted October 5, 2006 Thanks Mike :sadtears: Quote
Mike Posted October 15, 2006 Posted October 15, 2006 Would just like to say that I have been working on something resembling this, but progress is a little slow what with trying to find a method for it that will be scaleable and efficient, and having other present commitments. But an attachments library should surface eventually. Quote
Mike Posted October 15, 2006 Posted October 15, 2006 And how do you propose popularity would be gauged? Quote
bob stole my cookie Posted October 15, 2006 Author Posted October 15, 2006 I say we have a "Michaels (plural) appreciation day". Or maybe just an hour. And serve some nice cocktails. And those little hotdogs on sticks. It's a good excuse for a party. ................................................................................................... There used to be that 5-star rating system (in the upper right corner) for rating pieces, why not make a 10-point system and then list all the pieces that ranked say 8 or higher? Quote
Saiming Posted October 15, 2006 Posted October 15, 2006 We should have a YC Hall of Fame for all of the most enjoyed pieces posted here. LONG LIVE J. LEE! I do agree to that. And not only should the hall of fame show the most liked songs. Why not have a yearly competition of some sort? And that song will be added to that hall:) Quote
Mike Posted October 15, 2006 Posted October 15, 2006 There used to be that 5-star rating system (in the upper right corner) for rating pieces, why not make a 10-point system and then list all the pieces that ranked say 8 or higher? Hmm, I'd prefer to do an add-on system that offers more than just a single five or ten point rating. It could be comprised of many separate ratings such as harmony, orchestration, melody, production (if applicable), etc. Each member would get one vote. Then, after the votes had been reviewed by an admin to ensure that there hadn't been any funny business going on (e.g. people creating second accounts to rate their piece), the ratings would be frozen and considered eligible for the hall of fame. How does that sound? Quote
Mike Posted October 16, 2006 Posted October 16, 2006 I think that's very cynical, Nico. Of course there might be a few isolated incidences of what you described taking place, but as a reason to exclude normal members entirely from a voting process relating to their and their peers' pieces, I don't feel it holds much water. After all, sometimes people might post intentionally derogatory comments on other people's threads out of dislike - does this mean only the mods and reviewers should post comments and that members should just get to tick the ones they like? Abuse comes with virtually any privilege, and I don't agree that that is an adequate reason to discount this system entirely. And if it really would happen on a large enough scale to render it disruptive, we have a problem on our hands. Quote
Mike Posted October 16, 2006 Posted October 16, 2006 Right, some small progress to report on. If you go to the member list, you'll see a link to the right of each entry entitled "View Attachments". If you click this, and the user in question has uploaded at least one file with the extension sib, mus, mid, midi or nwc, you'll be taken to a page that lists them all. As for the actual library that shows an alphabetical list of members with all their attachments, that's still in the works...having some slight difficulties with pagination. :) Quote
Daniel Posted October 16, 2006 Posted October 16, 2006 Yikes. That has a piece I posted for someone else, in midi form, appearing under my attachments :) Not a piece that I neccesarily want to be accredited with... :D I'll just wait for the library though. Quote
Mike Posted October 16, 2006 Posted October 16, 2006 It'll show any attachments (musical attachments, that is) that you've posted. If you want to remove any of them, you can do it via your control panel. Anyway, the Attachments Library is now ready. :) http://www.youngcomposers.com/forum/library.php It shows every single music file submitted around the whole board, listed alphabetically by username. There's also a rudimentary search feature on the right hand side, which will search both attachment names and usernames for the terms you specify. The library just goes to show the sheer volume of music that has been submitted to the site over the last year and a bit. Quote
Daniel Posted October 16, 2006 Posted October 16, 2006 Only main problem is that for my resolution and browse (1024 x 768, Firefox) the attachments library button on the forum index causes the row of buttons to get rather messy. Good job on the library though. Quote
Mike Posted October 16, 2006 Posted October 16, 2006 Hmm, yeah, I was thinking that the navbar is getting a little congested. I'll remove Quick Links as a (possibly temporary) solution. P.S. There's also now a "View music uploaded by this user" option on all user dropdown menus (the thing that pops up when you click someone's name in a thread). Quote
Mike Posted October 16, 2006 Posted October 16, 2006 All I'm saying is if a piece is voted against when it's obviously of some merit, for it to be relooked. Of course, which is why ratings would be checked over before they were frozen. I'll work on a ratings system over the next few days. Even if it isn't a success, at least it's been trialled. Quote
PaulP Posted October 17, 2006 Posted October 17, 2006 This is a cool function, Mike, thank you. Although admittedly, it's prompted me to remove some of the midi's I had posted that were snippets intended to instruct or otherwise convey an idea of musical understanding or (mis)understanding, since the context why it was posted is absent in this function.
