Thatguy v2.0 Posted November 28, 2022 Posted November 28, 2022 Dude... Even though you didn't enter the competition... What an amazing and powerful piece this was. I'm happy to know that...yeah you didn't enter because you thought the score would be a factor, or that you felt some other circumstance wouldn't make you competitive...it brought out something unique and quite possibly the best in you. Your musical voice is something I'll always consider very much your own, and an amalgamation of your inspirations along with your own personal experiences. It's something we all strive for in composition. Forget the money I shelled out, music like yours is the reason why I wanted to do the competition. Congrats on a piece you should be proud of. 1 Quote
chopin Posted November 28, 2022 Posted November 28, 2022 This is EPIC. We need to get you into the habit of producing scores though 😛 This sounds like a waltz to me but correct me if I am wrong. Regarding your instrument usage. I was hoping the cello would get a bit more play time, after all, its the tortoise & the hare. I know the tortoise gets left behind, but he doesn't get abandoned or forgotten. After he, he does win, right? Great theme, usage of instruments, usage of dynamics (especially your crescendo towards the end when the tortoise came back and was victorious). *Pro tip regarding your audio: You need a cadence! Never cut off the end of your audio that abruptly. 1 Quote
Henry Ng Tsz Kiu Posted November 29, 2022 Posted November 29, 2022 That's so funny and playful! Your music depicts the story in front of my eyes! It gives me the impression of Disney's music!! The orchestral sound is great, and the chord change fascinating. That cello playing high register is creative, since that unnatural sound shows how much work the tortoise has done to claim the win! But I agree with @chopin that cello is featured so little in the music. It's like the writer forgot to narrate what's happening on the tortoise since the tortoise seemed disappeared through the hare's eyes. The oboe having surprise and claiming defeat is hilarious too! The ending is really abrupt😅 .Seems like the mother reading the storybook quickly close it and wipe it out. What a nice piece you have composed! 1 Quote
PeterthePapercomPoser Posted December 2, 2022 Posted December 2, 2022 Nice job! Your brand of harmonically rich and filled out orchestrations really shines in this. I thought that this mp3 was recorded a bit too quiet on my end for some reason. I think you have a cool ambiguous harmony at the end when the cello ends on the E natural. I actually expected the E to slide down to an Eb creating an Ab major chord. Instead of that you took the Ab and slid that down to a G to create a C major chord. You also could have slid the C down to a B to make an E major chord of course LoL. Thanks for sharing this piece - I know you had your reservations about sharing a piece which was technically not yet done. It's too bad you couldn't participate in the competition on time because of your ear troubles. 1 Quote
WowBroThatWasReallyEdgy Posted December 4, 2022 Posted December 4, 2022 Incredible harmonic taste and great melodies to follow! Love how you follow the "golden ratio" around 1:25. I've always had an interest in your music and believe that you are one of the best composers on this forum. Keep up the great work. 1 Quote

Yes I impulsively posted it after the pressure to share it became too great haha. Quote

Thank you Henry, yes the high register cello is kind of my signature move, it sounds good with east west! Yeah I understand the concerns about the cello I share them too now. I'll have to check out some of your music, you've been pretty prolific on here! Keep it up man! 1 Quote

Thank you for your amazing hard work keeping this place running and vibrant. You are helping new generations of composers learn the way I did, by interacting with each other. Tom Statler Posted December 5, 2022 Posted December 5, 2022 Nice job - I really enjoyed the "hare" writing in the first minute, and the subtle inner-voice glissando around 0:35 is a smart little brush-stroke. I agree with the others that you may have left the tortoise, as well as the story concept, behind after 1:00, but it was fun to listen to. 1 Quote
gmm Posted December 14, 2022 Posted December 14, 2022 This is really good! I really like your use of very exotic scales and the unique textures you create with them. I especially like the ending, how after the big dramatic climax the rest of the orchestra fades away, leaving only the two solo instruments. I thought that was a really cool effect. I agree with others that the cello needs more of a presence. Maybe around the 1:00 mark or so, you could adjust the waltz so that the cello gets the melody, while the oboe continues as a countermelody in the background... perhaps symbolizing the tortoise surpassing the hare?... And as I always say, you really should spend a little time putting a score together. Not only would it make your music easier to follow, but it would make the presentation more professional. Your music is really good, and it deserves to be presented in the best light possible. Thanks for sharing, I always look forward to your unique voice. 1 Quote
Quinn Posted December 18, 2022 Posted December 18, 2022 A bit late on the scene here but I have to agree with other commenters: brilliant. Interesting harmonies/progressions, flows beautifully. Cut off a bit abruptly at the end though. And yes, it would be nice to see a score though I can understand anyone not wanting to offer one as anyone can download and mess with it. We have had such people here! 1 Quote
