AngelCityOutlaw Posted December 12, 2022 Posted December 12, 2022 This post was recognized by Thatguy v2.0! "I'm calling you when I make a film" AngelCityOutlaw was awarded the badge 'Film Composer' and 5 points. I really hate winter, so I composed something that would remind me of somewhere warmer. I was sort of going for that Prince of Persia or "The Mummy" vibe. I appreciate your listening, and any comments you may have. Quote
Henry Ng Tsz Kiu Posted December 13, 2022 Posted December 13, 2022 That really gives me a Persian feeling! So exciting and heated with the Persian scale and the use of middle east instruments! Great job! 1 Quote
Thatguy v2.0 Posted December 14, 2022 Posted December 14, 2022 Very cool music, as usual haha. You've got a real talent for mixing, everything seems so well balanced! Is this for anything in particular? With how good you are, I'd be surprised in you weren't hustling through the film industry. Very fine work, Chris 1 Quote

Nah, it's just one more for the collection. I'll put it out there for licensing for documentaries or whatever, though. 1 hour ago, Thatguy v2.0 said: With how good you are, I'd be surprised in you weren't hustling through the film industry. I appreciate that. Unfortunately though, let's just say: the film composition business and now games as well are pretty far from a meritocracy at this point. =/ 1 Quote

Just keep doing what you're doing. Maybe the business side of it all is a who's who in "talent", but you'll find your way into the party if you keep writing the way you do. Quote

In late 2019, I was actually in an apprentice/mentor program working some film composers out of LA and such. Only made it a few months before the COVID thing crushed it all. Quote

Do they not do this type of thing anymore? COVID was a bitch for all of us, but I'm sure those opportunities are still there Quote

COVID was a scallop for all of us, but I'm sure those opportunities are still there The deal of the program, which I suspect the other guys were getting paid directly for, was that a previous winner cannot even enter the competition twice. They took ten people from across the country, and I was chosen for my province. The guild that hosted it bizarrely didn't offer any sort of extensions or anything due to COVID. I still talk with one of the composers nearby who I got hooked up with via the program, but since COVID he hasn't really been doing film work and is mostly still just teaching at a university. I'll be honest with you: It doesn't really bother me, though. I spent most of my adult life up until around 2020 dedicated to music, but since then, I've started up some other unrelated businesses that are profitable and much less depressing than chasing work or money that people owe me, and I don't have to write to someone else's specifications or deadlines. I don't turn my nose up if someone does offer me a custom-scoring job, I'm doing a bit of work for an Australian game right now (shameless plug for my paranormal lounge track on the forum) but on the financial side with music, but I've mostly come to see it as an asset rather than a job. I compose tracks I want to, like the one in this thread, and if someone is interested in using it in their project, I license it out to them and on indie games, I keep the rights to my music so it too can be used elsewhere. But mostly, I am interested in having people listen to and enjoy it. Some of my work on YouTube has almost 100k plays with 99% likes. To me, that means more than getting paid for a project that is probably never going to sell 100k copies. Quote

It's OK to compose for money but much better to compose for fun or expressing oneself, really. The pleasure from other people's compliment will be 100 times higher than those for money. It' s even better like you to compose music you want even for music paid! Quote
