For starters, I want to apologize if this is in the wrong subforum.

I'm debating on starting a masterclass that will cover a few topics:

  • Modern Counterpoint Technique: Motivic interplay, Dissonant Counterpoint
  • Modern Musical Forms and Microforms
  • Modern Development

I might add a few more topics in here. These are pretty vague, umbrella topics.

What I'd like to know is if anyone would find merit in learning these topics within a forum masterclass?

My idea would be to start with the contrapuntal techniques. I'd provide a short theme snippet of say 5 or 6 notes. Students would be able to take these 6 note themes and extrapolate motivic units that they would then utilize within a contrapuntal texture. Analysis would occur within the forum and the student would learn the various techniques available to develop further contrapuntal material from this material.

Anyone interested?

I would like to join the masterclass! 🙋‍♂️Though I may not  do the exercises as a lazy student!! But it is really interesting to have these topics cover here as they are quite hard to capture sometimes, and having you as a guide to help us learn the techniques will be really beneficial to us!

This is really cool, especially in the style that you're so adept at. I wish I could say I would be participating, but I'm just too busy with music projects. However, I'd be very interested in if others were engaged and writing along with your lesson plans so I could lurk and follow along in the shadows

I don't know if you were around when QcCowboy was, but it might be cool to do it in that format as well. He just basically presented a bunch of information to digest without the need for specific "students" to share micropieces that they wrote. I know that's just a bunch of work on your end to pixels suspended in a light we all stare at, but I'd at least find it useful.

Thanks for bringing this up, the masterclasses were one of my favorite parts of YC back in the day.

Yes, I was here when QC was doing his orchestration masterclasses -which are based off of Belkin's online courses. I like the idea of that concept, but.... it's easier in a forum format to do smaller pieces that get reviewed, imho. I thought that was something his courses lacked in. You didn't know if you were actually implying his material or not. Or if you just took what he said in the opposite direction. At any rate, I'll probably do a hybrid model. I'm not too worried about time. It's a forum, after all. My composition time comes first thought!

I am now looking at the orchestral masterclass by QC. Quite amazing introductory material! Of course I will research more with scores and books but obviously his classes are pinpointing the important thing of orchestration!
