SoloYH Posted February 19, 2023 Posted February 19, 2023 Good evening guys, my name is Young Ho Kim. I love classical music, and I started composing fugues last year. Then this summer, I heard Strobe by Deadmau5, and decided to learn how to produce electronic music. Please critique my first compositions, and synthesis. Thank you. Thatguy v2.0 Posted February 19, 2023 Posted February 19, 2023 Hey dude, welcome! I skimmed a few of your pieces (sorry I normally write longer reviews, but I'm about to leave), but I like what I'm hearing. Very cool mix of influences, you'll find lots of love for the classical style approaches here, as well as your EDM music. I know you're just giving us a sample of your work, but normally post only one piece per post since with 8 total, you mind find that some of your pieces don't get the attention they deserve. We're happy you joined this niche of the internet, it helps to get out there and share some thoughts with other's works for increased chances at feedback. You'll find that when you give a bit of time to share some insight with someone, no matter how small you may find it, it goes appreciated and the favor is usually returned. Can't wait to hear some more of your stuff. I've checked out HahaHouse and Quartet in F minor, I love how diverse you are. I've written several electronic pieces I haven't shown here, I look at that style as well as classical-laced music as a getaway from the band music I usually do. Stick around, you'll find tons of experienced composers here willing to offer their advice and insight for free. Glad you're around! 1 Quote
SoloYH Posted February 19, 2023 Author Posted February 19, 2023 (edited) I appreciate your feedback, and I didn't realize there were rules against. And I totally understand, since I was on TalkClassical Forums, and people would just drop their work and never show up again, and that did grind my gears a lot. I apologize for doing so. Originally I looked for a place to make an introduction, but I couldn't find it. Anyways, thank you for your kind words and hope to be here a while 🙂 Edited February 19, 2023 by SoloYH Quote
Henry Ng Tsz Kiu Posted February 19, 2023 Posted February 19, 2023 Hello @SoloYH, Welcome to the forum! As @Thatguy v2.0 noted you should probably split the pieces for individual posts! You don't have to apologise at all, we are just afraid that all the eggs put in a basket would be ignored all over! The fugue in F minor sounds nice for me, except I don't like the caesura of the subject in its initial appearance, but later it's compensated by other voices so it's fine! I just notice some notes in the alto part is having the notehead reflected, is it for indicating an individual voice? For the chorale in B minor, what is your intended style? I notice there are some parallels and tone clashes. The direction is not quite clear, but I love the combination of sound of it! If you have time you can also review fellow talented composers' works! I am sure you will find lots of interesting posts here! I will review the remaining pieces. Thanks for sharing! Henry 1 Quote

Henry Hi Henry for the warm welcome, and apologies in delay,,, umm, I was a bit emotional on the weekend and was a little embarrassed here. For the Fugue, the lul in the 5th measure seems to be a common criticism. I'll try if I can figure out something that sounds better. As for the chorale, I regret deeply the instrumentation. I think I would like it to a keyboard performance. I listen to it this day and go like "what was I thinking..." I appreciate you two listening to me, and I will do the same. I hope we can help each other and I hope to make this my new home to discuss compositions and music! 🙂 1 Quote

Yeah because normally fugue is linked with the Baroque style which has driving motions and fluency, that's why having a stop will sound strange in it. 9 minutes ago, SoloYH said: As for the chorale, I regret deeply the instrumentation. Haha I think we always have this feeling of hoping to improve our works to perfect and even more perfect. It's great for our improvement but sometimes we just need to relax and embrace our flaws especially in those immature works! I can tell you that my first works are appalling! You can rewrite if you want but letting it stay its way will also be fine! 11 minutes ago, SoloYH said: I appreciate you two listening to me, and I will do the same. Through mutual respect and reviewing I am sure all of us can learn something and inspire our compositional progress! Henry Quote
Henry Ng Tsz Kiu Posted February 23, 2023 Posted February 23, 2023 Hi @SoloYH, I have listened to two more pieces you posts! On 2/19/2023 at 10:38 AM, SoloYH said: Korean Playground Memories For me this is quite simplistic and fit for the playground memories, and I like the sound of harmonica! Make sure you delete all those unnecessary rests for the piano, and the ending is quite abrupt for me! You can probably prolong the ending even if you want a cadence! The retransition back to F minor in b.41 is also abrupt for me with the E flat major directly modulates to f minor, but I enjoy the cello melody there. For me the octave sign in b.45 of the piano is not quite necessary as it's not too high for a pianist! You can add slurs for the strings to indicate legato playing, and add more expressions and dynamic markings to enrich the sound! Some of the harmonic progression and voice leading can be improved but they are very good first compositions! I guess you have already progressed from these pieces! Thanks for sharing here! I'll clean it up a little bit but still unsure if it should be 1 piano or 2. I have a feeling the desired effect won't be had with just 1. 8 hours ago, Henry Ng Tsz Kiu said: For me . Henry I'm trying to experiement with MuseScore 4, but it has been a rough journey. While I can get a more realistic performance, it has been crashing and I haven't been able to figure out a whole bunch of things. Perhaps it will sound teeny bit less abrupt with the new software *fingers crossed* Quote
