epii Posted March 10, 2023 Posted March 10, 2023 This is a song I wrote and want to put a vocal on but I hate my singing. It’s primarily an acoustic guitar song. I’d like to know what people think of the melody and arrangement. Please feel free to comment. It’s a virtual guitar that I painstakingly transferred over from my fingering on my real guitar. I prefer virtual instruments over real instruments for my recordings because I have more control over them. This was done in the Sonar 8.5 piano roll as I do all my stuff. Thanks for listening. -Rick MP3 Play / pause JavaScript is required. 0:00 0:00 volume > next menu meaning of love > next 2 Quote
Anto21 Posted March 10, 2023 Posted March 10, 2023 Wow, this is good! I love all the melodies going on, especially at 1:35! Maybe it could be even better with a singing, but I don't know, because it doesn't sound like something's missing at all. Also, all the istruments togheter totally give the idea of love to me, happy and a little nostalgic, so I guess the title "meaning of love" is appropriate 🙂. I know mine isn't a tecnical or professional opinion at all but it's what I think, really a beatufiul and happy song 👍 Quote
epii Posted March 10, 2023 Author Posted March 10, 2023 Anto21, Thank you very much! I put so much work into my stuff it's nice to hear a kind comment every now and then. I think it's very interesting that you especially like the melody at the 1:35 mark because that's the interlude where there would no singing! The harpsichord type sound in that part is actually just the same acoustic guitar library, I just went up an octave where it sounds harpsichord-y. I very much appreciate your feedback and was glad to hear you describe it as happy. To me it's more melancholy, but a lot of my stuff is melancholy... I can't help it. So thanks for that! It makes me feel a little less... you know.. melancholy. 🙂 -Rick Quote
Henry Ng Tsz Kiu Posted March 10, 2023 Posted March 10, 2023 Hello @Anto21, Again it's lovely music from you! I love your arrangement of instruments! Your guitar melody is attractive! Again in 2:29 that sudden modulation is great! 4 hours ago, epii said: I’d like to know what people think of the melody and arrangement. Please feel free to comment. I think the other instruments, for example the flute and strings can have more countermelodies instead of repeating what the guitar is playing! Very lovely music and thanks for sharing! Henry Quote
epii Posted March 11, 2023 Author Posted March 11, 2023 Henry, Thanks! Hmmm.. counter melodie’s? I had a hard enough time just choosing the one main melody… hehehe I think of counter melodie’s in stuff like Bach but maybe I’m mixing that up with counter point. I’m not trained in music like many here at YC and would love to understand music theory but as much as I’ve tried I just can’t get anything out of it. I know it’s really important stuff but I’m much too thick headed to learn all the rules and end up defaulting back to instinct. I’m just lazy I guess. At any rate, thanks for commenting on my stuff. I very much value your opinion. -Rick Quote
PeterthePapercomPoser Posted March 12, 2023 Posted March 12, 2023 You say you don't know theory but I find your writing well informed by probably many years of experience in playing guitar. Your harmonic and melodic intuition is really great just from that. Maybe you can't name all the harmonic moves you make and you just think in terms of what chords sound well followed by what other chords, but trust me, there is a lot of craft to what you're doing. It's very accessible and soothing and easy to listen to. It also has a kind of introduction, main body, and the general formal scheme really works for this type of short "song". It would be neat to hear what kind of lyrics you could put to this if you do ever decide to put that vocal line to it. Also, I like that you manage to end it pretty well without just fading out - that takes some skill too! Thanks for sharing. Quote
epii Posted March 12, 2023 Author Posted March 12, 2023 PeterthePapercomPoser, Thank you for your valuable feedback. I’ve been listening to your stuff and wow! You are not only a talented composer but also an amazing keyboardist. I really don’t know where to begin when critiquing the sort of music you compose. It’s complicated stuff and for the most part way out of my pop comfort zone. You’re compositions, to me, are like driving on a freeway compared to the way I putt slowly along down a country road. I can say that the way you always change things up with key changes and timings like throwing in triplets, keeps the ear engaged by keeping things interesting. Really great stuff! And you are also prolific! -Rick 1 Quote
