jonesem12 Posted April 27, 2023 Posted April 27, 2023 (edited) I have been writing this modal piece set by my teacher for class. It begins in dorian d, and my teacher suggested to write a 'B section' in aeolian a. Would anyone be able to help me with this, as in how to change keys and any good ideas for new melodic ideas? I have no musical experience whatsoever, I can't even read sheet music. the score is chared publicly, so any help / edits you could give me is appreciated. I am in high school and I really need these credits! https://www.noteflight.com/scores/view/0ee8bbcb84b56b861507d01ec272af7d74631b98 Edited April 27, 2023 by jonesem12 Quote
Henry Ng Tsz Kiu Posted April 27, 2023 Posted April 27, 2023 Hi @jonesem12, Regarding the modulation it's not that hard! You are having a C major, or C Ionian here. I will just seperate it to two halves, first half retaining your chord here and second half having a E aeolian or E minor chord with E, G and B. The modulation will be quite smooth to A aeolian! Do your teacher limit your instrumentation? I find the harp quite inaudible under the wind instruments. Also the range of horn in F will be F5, so some of the notes will be out of ranged particularly those with an octave up in b.8. 3 hours ago, jonesem12 said: any good ideas for new melodic ideas? You can think of contrasting mood. Also you can think of having different melodic and rhythmic feature. You always have the melody getting upward with a Long note-short-short-long-long pattern. You can for instance have the melody go downwards and reverse the rhythmic pattern! You can also reverse the roles to have harp feature, for example. Thanks for sharing! Henry Quote
jonesem12 Posted April 28, 2023 Author Posted April 28, 2023 Thank you! My teacher reccomended the harp, but only to play a scalic accompniment to help keep the tempo and such. Would you mind labelling my score with those modes you listed? Again, I know literally nothing about music theory - I am just going by what sounds pretty in my head, hahaha! Your feedback was very helpful! Quote

I am almost finished, but I am struggling with a modulation in the middle section of the piece. Everything is complete apart from this; I can't find a nice key change to make it work. The section starts at bar 26, and is supposed to be a passing mode (E aeolican) to reach F major (I don't know the mode) https://www.noteflight.com/scores/view/f3cbe70d3b1962208582c3dca2c9d155c43e6eb3 Any more help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks again Quote

The ending for me is strange too since it's a unision C#/Db. I think you will end on a C aeolian whatsoever! The harp soundtrack doesn't sound like harp for me, it's more a wind instrument here 😝!
