The Forest Girl

Greetings.

I want to present another composition of mine, which I wrote in February 2023. This short piano piece, written in F-sharp minor, is based on "The Diary of A Forest Girl" by Aeppol, a Korean artist. This collection contains fanciful illustrations that I admire a lot, which later inspired me to write this piano piece. I managed to capture my performance on video, but it took me countless tries to get it right (but still flawed) since this piece was technically challenging to play.

Anyway, here is the video recording, and let me know what you think about this piece.

Absolutely charming!  There is an almost waltz-like quality about much of this piece, which I love.  The maggiore section has an almost old-time, turn of the 20th Century American air about it, which I also love.  Wonderful coda at the end too, which wraps everything up very nicely.  Well done, and what a lovely performance!

This is very charming music. I don't know why, but the outer sections remind me Chopin's Mazurka especially his first one in the same key, op.6 no.1. The movement of the piece is so fluid and the work is so pianistic with all those decorative notes. The middle section is quite magical for me with the tonic major modulation and featuring high register with those broken chords.

I just look at the internet and find the collection which gives you inspiration. Your music for sure suits the collection with the tender and light style!

What a fantastic piece, and it was great to see you play it too! Lately I've been blown away by the talent of composers on here, it's so inspiring. Charming is definitely the word but also impressive, it looks difficult to play. Well done, Carl!

You "technically" posted a score, but I couldn't quite make out the sheets of your binder haha. Could you upload it next time? I would have loved to follow along.

Hi Papageno, thank you for your kind feedback, and I appreciate it! This piece is challenging to play, and I almost injured my fingers when performing it, especially the wide leaps in the right-hand part.

Awesome composition and performance. Some of the things I most like about this piece is the subtle cleverness of the writing -- for example, I really admire the D bass note on ms. 19 accompanying the G#7 chord, which smoothly transitions into the C#7 -> F#m. That kind of attention to voice-leading -- it's little things like that that inspire me to pay close attention to the details in my own writing, because I tend to like "big picture" stuff, but I often forget how much music is sometimes made in the "little decisions" as well. Like, if I had been writing this passage, maybe I would have chosen ms. 19's L.H. to have a G# bass note, which would be fine, but clearly it would have been a missed opportunity.
