The "Can I point out the melody correctly" YouTube challenge

I'm going to try another series on my YouTube channel (don't forget to subscribe btw). The series will be challenges, which is why I will start posting them here if this works out. But the challenges will have a twist. In this case, you will be presented in a YouTube video if you participate. This specific challenge would revolve around melody writing. And there can be multiple challenges of the same topic depending on popularity. The premise of this challenge:

What makes a good melody? This is something that is not easy to answer. There doesn't seem to be a good formula, despite people trying to do so on YouTube.

So what is this challenge?

Submit an existing piece you feel is melodic (You can compose one too, but this isn't meant to be a competition, and I don't want to sit on this for months...a week or two at most). You can link your piece you wish to submit in this thread. And what I will attempt to do is point out your melody or melodies on camera. I'll try to explain what makes them good melodies. And the challenge is...can I point out the melody correctly?

What this challenge will do is a few things

  1. Put me on the spot, but put the composer on the spot as well. Did your music convey the melody so that a listener (me in this case) could point it out correctly?
  2. Did you captivate an audience? Think of me as a smaller sample set of a larger sample.
  3. Real world examples of melodic writing from "today's composers" (either amateur, non established or established, it doesn't matter) can help other people see how to accomplish writing melodies. No formulas, no tricks, just real world examples and what makes them melodies.
  4. I feel that this challenge will be more effective with "today" composers. Composers of the past can work, but people may be like "yeah yeah, it's Bach, or Beethoven, what else is new".

This will be the first interactive video I would create. Who knows how it will do but who wants to give it a shot? I'll close this thread after I feel there are enough submissions. If I get no submissions, I will attempt to do this with passed on composers. But I also risk copyright strikes. It's tough running a music channel!

Long compositions are fine. I will listen through the whole thing and pick out what I feel are melodic for the video. Thank you for your submission.

Can I propose this ? The composition is long but the main melody occurs between 0:00 and 2:00

Feel free to propose the first movement of that concerto too. I'm listening to it now and it has really good melodic content. I can condense the 18 minutes, so don't worry about that, if that is your concern.

Then I also propose the first movement ! 🙂

Hey Mike,

Writing a good melody is always my weak point I guess. I propose that maybe two of my pieces are melodic enough but I'm not sure which to choose from, so I attach the  YC links here only (due to laziness haha):

I think the passage from 0:04-2:50, 4:33-5:36 (repeat of the first section) and the ending from 6:28 onward (excluding the school bell) is melodic for me haha.

Or this:

I think it's the most melodic movement I've composed.

Thanks for the submissions so far. I'll actually keep the thread open a little longer. If we get more people who are interested, I can always just split the video into parts.

So I probably should be finished with my video sometime mid week. It's a very long video (half an hour or so), and I will only premiere it if we can get a headcount of who would be available to watch. I'm willing to premiere it off hours, like at midnight EST Friday or Saturday if that's what it takes. Is it possible to have at least all 5 composers tune in next weekend at midnight EST?

I'm going to start collecting headcounts because I think it can be fun if we can build our premiere viewership.

I'll probably be able to make the premiere as it's at 4:00 PM NZST. Though I'll make no promises, things are getting busy down here, especially with school and stuff.

Oh I'm sorry, entries are closed for this video, I should have specified. The video is already half an hour and I scripted / recorded it already. If the video does well I'll do another around a similar topic or so.
