Db Bach Style Piece.pdf

Hi everyone,

This piece came to me after listening to Bach and certain sections of the piece are inspired by him, but not all. The title is just a place holder because I can't think of anything at the moment.

I don't make many scores, so any comments on it (and the piece of course) would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

The engraving is quite good, although the phrase marks/slurs in some places look a bit strange (altho i don't know how much of that is under your control).

Also, are they supposed to be slurs or phrase marks? Because in some places, such as b. 3, or b. 5, they are quite short, whereas in some parts in the left hand  (and the right hand to a lesser extent) they are longer.

Also, the recording sounds wonderful.

Hi, thanks for listening! The slurs were place by me. Some of them are shorter because the left hand would have to make a fairly big jump between the notes which I think would be hard to play legato. Or, I am incorrect in thinking this and slur is supposed to be very long most of the time?

Haha yes the piece is not quite Bach-like but this doesn't affect how good this piece is. The pace of it reminds me of a Nocturne or a piece inspired by Beethoven's Moonlight. Maybe Nocturne in D flat major will be great enough.

Your pieces always appear simple but there are lots of details in it to make it sounds real good. The use of suspension is nice, and the chordal progression here is so sensitive. The move to Ab minor in the middle section is somewhat surprising but your transition is fluent. You build the climax with patience which makes it very reasonable with more compact rhythmic patterns and higher register. The recapitulation in Ab major makes sense, and the ending to low register for RH melody in b.84 is such a nice move.

Maybe I will add a suspension of Db in b.6 to resolve to C in b.7, and suspension of C in b.8 to make it more Bach like haha.

This is a real enjoyable piece and thx for sharing!

Hehe, if you had not mentioned Bach, I would have thought this piece were inspired by guys like Schumann, Mendelssohn, possibly Chopin, it has a romantic touch ... It was a nice listening.

Thank you & Greetz,

Jan

I agree, with @Jan-Frederik Carl and with @Henry Ng Tsz Kiu, the piece doesn’t sound that much like Bach, except in some punctual places (like b. 57), but it is very good, I’d say it is early romantic or maybe really late classical, it reminds me of Schubert or maybe Mendelssohn, and the middle A-flat minor section reminded me of the moonlight sonata first movement.

I also use flat as a notation software, it is not very common in the young composers community
