Jqh73o Posted October 13, 2023 Posted October 13, 2023 Hello, I am planning to write a piano concerto, and I don’t know what degree of difficulty should I apply for the non-soloist instruments such as violin, trumpet, etc So if you play any symphonic instrument, could you tell me where is the limit of difficulty for your instrument for a non soloist performance? Thank you Quote
expert21 Posted October 13, 2023 Posted October 13, 2023 There isn't a 'limit' on difficulty for non-soloists, you can make it as difficult as you see fit for the music. However, for something like a concerto I'd tone down the difficulty for the non-soloist instruments in order to ensure the spotlight is on the soloist alone. 1 Quote
Quinn Posted October 14, 2023 Posted October 14, 2023 For me, this involved i) talking to musicians themselves where possible - where you can find ex-professionals, retired professionals etc, and ii) study scores that make relevant demands.... (I chose Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra and Stravinsky's Rite of Spring (original score IIRC which was published as a study score by Boosey and Hawkes. The latter in particular makes huge demands, starting from the very first note, a bassoon solo on high D). It isn't just stretching instrumental compass or rapidity of playing but dealing with rhythmic complexities. It might be best to write what you want then (if you can find people) check if it's possible. Books on orchestral instruments and/or tutor opinions may help but they aren't always useful when dealing with extremes. Best of luck. Quote
Jqh73o Posted October 14, 2023 Author Posted October 14, 2023 Thank you all for your advice, I don’t think that it will ever be played (at least in a near future), but I want it to be playable Quote

You may check the book out too! Henry Quote
