Rich Posted October 27, 2023 Posted October 27, 2023 Question: In pop music/jazz, the music between major phrases is called a FILL. Does classical music have a technical term for this? Is it the same? Quote

Otherwise, look up ABA(-type) structures. . Quote
Rich Posted October 29, 2023 Author Posted October 29, 2023 Quinn-- Bridge passage may be getting closer--- But I am referring to perhaps half a measure/a full measure or at most two between PHRASES. Basically a ligature between the A/B phrase sections of a melodic line. The closest parallel I know of terminology wise is "anacrusis"--the brief lead in to a phrase. Quote
PeterthePapercomPoser Posted October 29, 2023 Posted October 29, 2023 Maybe I'm oversimplifying it but how about ... transition? 🤔 Quote
Rich Posted October 29, 2023 Author Posted October 29, 2023 It's not really "transitioning"! --its filling! There just has to be some clever latin or italian name for it! Its making me nuts (or nuttier). Imagine "twinkle twinkle little star." between star....How I wonder: As is, there is a dead space. If we throw in an eighth rest on the beat, and a three eightH- note little broken chord figure, we connect the two phrases--FILL THE SPACE... Quote

Maybe they are also just call the filler. I remember even in the academic sonata theory Hepokoski and Darcy just name the fillers filler material when covering up the medial caesura. Henry Quote
Rich Posted October 30, 2023 Author Posted October 30, 2023 Medial cesura!!! Ha, I just learned something. Thanks again Henry. Glad you are feeling better. 8 hours ago, AngelCityOutlaw said: Why does it matter lol Well, human beings tend to name everything--its the secret of our success as a species! And it allows us to precisely communicate. Now I can talk to Henry about my "Medial Cesura" problems!!! Anyhow, I realized these "spaces" were a problem in my compositions, and I am working to provide more fluency to phrasing and overall flow by FILLING these where appropriate...it works! 1 Quote
