Ben Callender Posted December 11, 2023 Posted December 11, 2023 Here is a short and difficult prelude in g sharp minor. It's in variation form and focuses on many different techniques. PeterthePapercomPoser Posted December 11, 2023 Posted December 11, 2023 Wow - quite a scherzo-like piece with very quick tempo and figurations and plenty of chromaticism! It would take a true virtuoso to play it! The introduction is quite different from the rest of the piece and does a great job at subverting the listeners expectations before the piece proper gets started. I like all the changes in dynamics and tempo and meter that bring much musicality and life to the piece. I think the decrescendo at the end really draws the listener in after such a bold main body of the piece. Great job and thanks for sharing! Quote
Thatguy v2.0 Posted December 12, 2023 Posted December 12, 2023 Dude this is awesome! Definitely check the playability with a pianist, but I know you didn't write this to be an easy one. Reminds me of some Liszt stuff, especially the Mephisto Waltzes. Thanks for sharing! Would love to hear your input on the pieces of the other members here, you seem to have a lot to offer 🙂 Quote
Ben Callender Posted December 12, 2023 Author Posted December 12, 2023 I don't need to check the playability cause I can play it lmao. Thanks for the kind words! Quote

Well I can play it alright, but I don't enjoy practicing my own pieces enough to get them to performance level. I like learning other stuff instead. it's funny you mention mephisto waltz because I started learning that right after i finished this piece. Once I finish that I think I'm gonna go on a big grind and get all my pieces to performance level. Perhaps I'll play it then? We'll see I suppose Quote
Henry Ng Tsz Kiu Posted December 13, 2023 Posted December 13, 2023 Hi @Ben Callender, I agree with Peter that I enjoy the Scherzo like energy in it. The change of harmonic colour is great, and those thick chords for sure is dramatic. I actually agree with @Thatguy v2.0, I think you should try to play it since it will help polish and nuance your writing. Like in my own sonata movement I wrote something that will be too difficult to play, and when I played it myself I can modify all those details and prove that at least the piece is playable haha! Thx for sharing! Henry Quote
