Alone Between the Stars

Hello Everyone,

This is a hybrid orchestral space music with symphonic and electronic instruments. I'm curious about your opinion. (If you see a "do not click here" text, don't worry, I'm just testing the click-through rate with this thumbnail. If you don't see it, I replaced it with the original.)

For me the music is quite “in the stars” but not alone, even though you use the piano as the solo person, since the stars around her is too gigantic! 2:21 again begins the metamorphosis stage frequently seen in your pieces but the theme is well recognised! The electronic sound there is fitting to the mood and with the trumpet for me. I think at the ending section (03:51) you wanna break the rules of having the climax at the end by having the piano back. I think it’s a good attempt and maybe it can be more lonely wthouth any accompaniment!

Hi,

Yes, I could have composed it with fewer instruments, but I like it this way. Despite I really understand your criticism, and I appreciate your comment! Yes, the middle section is too "gigantic" and loud for this title, but I don't mind it. I think it has some catchy melodies, and the instrumentation is pretty good. (This is my personal opinion.) 🙂

My exact feeling.

I would say that if the video didn't show space but another background —a peaceful one or a grandiose one, at times— this piece would equally fit there. It's true that the choice of electronic instruments makes the piece less appealing for non-space environments but that's just cause of the timbre of one of those instruments. 

Just my two cents here, Olivér. In any case, glad to listen another great work from you. BTW, was it intentional that it kind of resembled your "The Cursed Castle" from Melodies of the Fantasy at its very beginning? They are both in G minor (or begin in G minor at least). Perhaps you just like that key :B.

I use G minor very often, because it's easy to orchestrate due to the orchestral instrument's ranges, and in G minor the piano is shiny and bright, but not too bright. For me, G minor is convenient. The middle section modulates to D minor. Do you think, the beginning is similar to "The Cursed Castle's" beginning? In my opinion, it's not true exactly, but who knows... 🙂

Another way you could expand your harmonic and melodic palette is to explore starting your melody on an extension of the chord you're on (on a 7th, 9th, 11th, or 13th).  This piece starts on the 5th which is really common and almost cliché in this kind of music (like the most common interval in heroic melodies for instance is the 5th).  I like the tempo changes in this although I still wish that you used more dynamic contrast and used chord progressions that are more harmonically ambiguous or don't start or end on the tonic.  Those are the things I yearn for when I hear this music although it's good as it is too - it's just my personal bias and preference about what I think would make your music even better!  Thanks for sharing.
