Luis Hernández Posted August 1 Posted August 1 Could anyone recommend any texts on jazz harmony? I am interested especially from a compositional point of view, not so much as "improvisation". For example, topics like voicings, extended chords, overlays, polychords, etc.... I'm not interested in a collection of scales and modes and chords, but something more organic and functional. I have studied on my own, and some of these issues are dealt with, for example by Persichetti, although from a more traditional point of view. Thank you. Quote
mazeth Posted August 2 Posted August 2 Hi @Luis Hernández, if you understand French, I have been following Etienne Guéreau, who is really knowledgeable in this area: https://www.youtube.com/@Pianojazzconcept He also published an excellent book (unfortunately not translated): En Harmonie - Fondements de l'harmonie tonale et modale dans le jazz After some research yesterday (your last post on Tristesse motivated me 😉), I think this book should also be excellent (in English this time): The Berklee Book of Jazz Harmony (do not buy the Kindle version, it only gets bad reviews) (not really jazz-related, but I think I will also go for this book: Contemporary Counterpoint: Theory & Application) Hasta luego, Julien 1 Quote
mazeth Posted October 10 Posted October 10 Hi again @Luis Hernández, just finished the 2 books I was mentioning in my previous post, really excellent stuff. I also found out that an English version existed: it's called "Jazz theory & workbook", by Etienne Guéreau ! So I can only recommend it. Here's a link: https://amzn.eu/d/9S7vTJh Enjoy! Julien Quote
